I will be taking the rover to the shop to get the headgaskets fixed along with a few other things. When I called the shop I asked them if I should bring in my own coolant or if they supply it. They said that they would just use theirs but they said it is the yellow coolant. I think that it is the prestone extended life. They say that they have been using it in all the vehicles that come in there even the late model rovers. Has anyone else used this coolant with a D2? Do you think that I should stick to the Dex-cool or use the new stuff?

You have come to the right place, I used to sell bulk coolant, I had to take a class to learn about coolant.
Dex-Cool is corrosive IF it is not properly maintained.
You can use ANY coolant that is aluminum safe in ANY aluminum cooling system.
Dex-Cool is NOT compatible with other coolants, so ask them to do a complete cooling system flush before they put the new coolant in.
There will be Dex-Cool in the heater core so that all needs to come out, no big deal.
The Prestone is perfectly fine, I prefer Peak Global Lifetime coolant.
No matter what coolant you use change it every 2 years no matter the miles.
LR recommends changing the coolant every 3 years or 45,000 miles, whichever is sooner on a DII, every 30,000 miles on a DI.
Your fine, dont sweat it.

 

my next oil change which is in about 800 miles i will be doing the coolant. it was done at the service prior to my purchase, but whenever i see dexcool i just have to make it go away. i hate it,,,


just replace with any good antifreeze,


spike i wanted to ask you about zerex phosphate free. i saw that at my local parts store and it said recommended for MB.Porsche. BMW, etc. and it reads at anti corrosive to aluminum.

I say go for it man, phosphate free just means better for the environment.
Is it the G-05 coolant? If so thats fine.
If you want to be like me, and we both know that you do, use Peak Global Lifetime, its a pretty yellow color.

Yes 50/50 pre-mixed, if you want to mix your own then make damn sure that you use distilled water, NO WELL WATER, city water is ok but NOT recommended.

I always wanted to be like Spike555, that's why I too use Peak Global Lifetime 50/50.... the yellow color IS pretty...

i am sticking to zerex coolant; just brought some at the dealer. pep boys does not sell zerex. brought coolant just to be on the safe side until i do a flush this summer along with power steering service; preventive medicine. 2003 disco se, 72k miles.
