Default coolant and oil leak

2000 d2 with 130000 i have coolant leaking down the back of my engine and onto my bell housing...oil leaking from somwhere in the front of the engine and running down. i stopped by the indepentdent land rover jag shop to see if they could figure it out. i told them from what i read it might be the valley pan gasket. he seems to think it that piece on the throddle body. but i don't see anything leaking there so i think i still vally pan gasket. have no idea where the oil is coming from. so i ask the guy if i replace the vally pan gasket how much more work would it be to just go ahead and do the head gaskets. he told me to not touch the motor unless something is really broke. said if i start tearing it apart and redoing gaskets it will kind of throw the motor off balance. said it is wore out and if you start adding new parts to it it won't like it and the motor will have more problems come up in the future. sounds like bull**** to me. but i am not a mechanic. what do you guys think

Perform a pressure test on the cooling system to find your leak. Yo can either have a mechanic do it, usually for about a half hour labor, or rent a tester yourself.

Clean and degrease your engine really good then check where your oil leak is coming from.

Replacing gaskets on your engine isn't going to hurt it. It's a lot of work to go through to replace the head gaskets if they don't need it but it won't hurt the engine. With 130,000 miles I am guessing that your head gaskets have already been replaced. The factory head gaskets usually only last about 100,000 miles.

What ever you do, don't use that mechanic, he sure has some weird ideas.
Collant leaks from the back of the block from either the vally pan or heads. At your mileage, if the heads haven't been doone, you are probably about ready.
As AK mentioned, do a pressure test then get under the truck and follow the coolant.

Find a new mechanic, that engine is FAR from worn out.

Take it to the DIY car wash, you know, the coin operated one, clean the engine and then drive for a couple of days and then look for the leaks again.
Make sure that your coolant level is full before doing this.
You dont want to run low on coolant.

Well he also told me to switch oil from mobile 1 to castrol and only change it every 12000 miles. That's when I really started having doubts about him as a land rover mechanic. He said the guys on this forum were just back yard mechanics and u have crazy ideas. I can give u his number or if u come to indianapolis I can take u to kick is *** for saying u guys are just ****ty back yard mechanics.

Yeah personally i wouldn't take my rover to him... But at least he wasn't trying to convince you it needed a whole bunch of stuff to rip you off... right?

We may be back yard mechanics but we know Rovers a lot better than he does apparently. I would find a mechanic that spends more time trying to fix your vehicle than he spends trying to discredit us.

12000 miles between oil changes with Castrol? Really? That mechanic is smoking something funny. Stay with your Mobil 1 and change it every 5000 and your engine will run nearly forever.

So, you seem to think this mechanic walks on water, he doesn't, he is a true idiot.
If you want some help, PM me your tele number and I'll call you.

Land Rover recommends every 7500 miles between oil changes and this back yard mechanic thinks that is even too long.
Go back and tell that guy that its back yard mechanics like us that got this country through every war we have ever been in, your Jeep breaks down in Eindhoven when you are fighting the Germans whos going to fix it? AAA aint coming to get you thats for damn sure, its us farm boys who fixed tractors while in the field during harvest that fixed the Jeeps, and the Sherman tanks and the deuce-and-a-half's.

Why yes, I am a self-taught backyard mechanic...and my teacher was a fool.

Seriously though, you sure you were talking to an actual mechanic and not the guy who runs after parts? Regardless, I'd find another shop because your truck does need to be fixed, Pan gasket at a minimum but probably head gaskets....oh yeah, don't forget to take a couple grand with you.

One other thing, people often recommend you pressure wash your engine so you can better see where it's leaking. I'm calling this a waste of time. If you have oily wetness running down your bell housing from behind your engine, what else do you need to know? Besides, you probably won't be able to see the leak in back of the engine no matter what you do and believe me I tried. The bottom of your heads are way back and down there. I used an extension mirror, flashlight etc, etc. complete waste of time for this inept backyard mechanic. On the other hand, the shop will appreciate working on a clean engine.
