Bundu, thanks for the reply, I have a question, I have been researching and every time someone ask a question "Can coolant leak in to engine through water pump?" every time is answered "no" so I was wondering if this is probably not common to happen at all, no meant to second guess but I want to understand how it can happen before I do the job...thanks

No it will not leak from the water pump to the oil pan. The water pump is mounted on the front cover (aka timing gear cover, oil pump cover) and the coolant passes through 2 channels in the front cover. If the front cover gasket develops a leak (and they do) then you can get coolant leaking directly into the oil pan.... brilliant British engineering. The other possibility is that the valley gasket is leaking coolant, but you said that was replaced, so I assume it is OK.

Default Front Cover

Hi bundu,
First let me thank you for the info, if it wasn't for that I would be spending 5k in a used engine, my truck is in the shop right now, he was advising engine replacement of course but I told him about the front cover, he called LR dealer and they confirm that is a good possibility that FC is the issue, he gave me price of $850.00 for gasket change with no warranty so I decided to do it myself since I feel confident I can pulled off, couple questions,

  • Should I replace Timing Chain since I have 160k on it?
  • Oil pump change?
  • People in forums mentioned that the LR gasket is the best to use?
  • Mechanic did dye test and radiator test, I guess should be around $200.00
So far I'm planing to change oil pan gasket, front cover gasket, new water pump and gasket, new Tstat and new throttle body heater core gasket. Any recommendations on what else to change?

Thanks a lot for your help if you are ever in Philly or need anything from around here please let me know.

Get the throttle body kit http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/MGM000010KG.cfm.
Replace the front cover oil seal since it is cheap http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ERR6490.cfm
If you do replace the timing chain then do the 2 gears as well. I would replace the set at those miles, cheap insurance against future failure.
The oil pump gears are $100, if it's not an issue to spend that then do it, again cheap insurance.
You get the same gaskets from most the of suppliers anyway, so it really does not matter. I would not trust anything from the zone and places like that, but maybe they are good, who knows.

Download the RAVE service manual from here if you don't have it: http://www.landroverresource.com/
There is all the information you will need on the repair.

You can shop around for parts at many places, prices do not vary too much.

You are going to need a 36mm fan clutch removal tool like this http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...___#fragment-2

Default I'm in the exact same boat

80000 miles and the timing gasket is leaking I got quoted right around $1000 just for the gasket. Then you have to ask yourself do i want to go thru this again, my answer was No. So I ordered a complete timing chain set, new water pump & bolts, theromstat, complete hose kits and a new belt. Then I decided I was aready halfway there (& i had a small intake leak) I might as well do the head gasket too, so I ordered a complete head gasket set with new bolts. My total was less than $600.00 in parts and probablly another $100 in misc oil and coolant say $700.00 total. I did not order an oil pump only because I have never read anything on the blogs about oil pump failure. I am going to try and attack it this weekend oh by the way the stealer wanted $3300 just to replace the gaskets no parts, so I figure I'm about $2500 ahead of the game.Bur I'm sure the Rover will get that back somehow, somewhere.

Why do head gaskets if you don't need to?

Default I have to pull the intake

why not do head gaskets? Im there and plan on keeping the truck, why go back in to do them, it appears its only a matter of time before they need to be done.

I don't agree with that, but that's just my opinion... if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Default Ordering Parts

Hi Bundu,

I'm ordering the parts including oil pump gears, are they difficult to replace?, and it is one bolt that everyone talks about being hart to loosen and it breaks off easily when working with front cover but I don't get which one it is. And last question, which oil do you recommend to use for 160k

thanks
