Cooling Mystery
New to land rover’s, it’s actually the first car i’ve owned in my name. I’m having overheating issues. I’ve replaced the thermostat and temp sensor, but still having same issue. I was told by a european mechanic that the head gaskets were not blown after getting a cooling system inspection. Now i’m thinking it’s the water pump, because what initially prompted my decision to replace the thermostat was the cool lower cooling hose, so with a brand new thermostat i’m thinking it’s a water pump failure that’s preventing the coolant from flowing. I really need help.
Radiator could be clogged, if it is overheating when at idle or slow stop n go traffic = fan clutch. Unless the water pump impellers are rusted away 100% the water pump should still pump coolant.
welcome to Rover ownership and this Forum. !!
Truly some knowledgeable people on here that will have some ideas for you to troubleshoot.
My two cents. First thing to do is look at is Extincts Inline Thermostat mod. Top of main page.
just because you replace a part doesn’t mean the new part is good. I learned the hard way when I went through my cooling system several times with new radiators, multiple stock thermostats and a poor performing new stock waterpump.
Take some time and start with the main top page threads.
I will say that if you end up needing a waterpump consider Flowkooler. had good luck when I replaced. Brought my temps down noticeably.

@JohnDT How does the overheat manifest ? Old school V8's generally show overheating in a few ways :
- Overpressure - almost l always heat gasket - unless you have significant overheat
- High reading on gauge - thermostat or clog
- Dropping coolant levels - generally head gasket or external leak
- Collapsed hoses - rad cap
