Hey guys,
Installed a new original 180 thermostat from roverparts, got coolant temps down 195-198 driving and 207 max at long idle. Still uncomfortable with the idle temperatures (down from 219 max at idle, previous 210-212 driving).

Question is how do I get the temperature down more? It starts to tick at 194....would feel much more comfortable without the tick.

your temps are almost identical to mine before and after a new thermostat and changing to green coolant. I read a bunch about the different thermostat temps and about the inline thermostat mod. unfortunately from what I've read you're really not going to see operating temps any lower than 194ish unless you upgrade the radiator. I was also going to attempt to get my temps down in the 180's to attempt to keep the liners from slipping and rattling but ive decided to just pin the liners in place and let it run within its normal operating temperature range. 185-210 is normal for most vehicles so as long as mine doesnt spike past 206 or so im comfortable with that.


i did gain a couple more degrees using purple ice before my overflow bottle cracked. i think ill drain the coolant again and do a low antifreeze to water ratio and purple ice which is what the bottle says will result in the coolest running temps

 

make sure your auxillary fan is coming on when your A/C is on. mine was burnt up and i didnt know it which is why i think i was seeing 205-208* temp spikes after i changed my thermo and coolant. since i fixed that and added purple ice i havnt seen anything over 203 and that was A/C on in traffic in 90+ ambient temps

 

New member questions. Is tick just at warm idle and what oil/weight are you using. Many have reported loosing the tick once they upgrade their oil.

I changed to the rotella dino oil, as suggested on here. Only driven about 400 miles on it. I think the tick is slightly better.

Tick is at warm/idle.....frequency increases with rpms

 

How many degrees did the the water wetter/purple ice cool it down

 

The cooling system will perform only as well as the limiting part of it (weakest link) allows. In your case it's now not the thermostat. On the other hand a friend of mine changed the radiator and the thermostat and still got cruising temps only in the high-190s. At cruising speeds even the viscous fan clutch is not the limiting factor. I can't explain it but there simply seem to be other variables at work. Your temps are not ideal but they are also not a problem nor dangerous to your truck.

 

I have the inline thermostat mod and my temps running down the road are 184-188 typically. It can creep up to 205-210 idling but my aux fan isn't working so I try to keep those times to a minimum.

BG Super Cool. Maybe just placebo, but it's $10 and Works for me. 204F yesterday while it was 95F outside.
