Cost of Ownership
I have a 1996 Discovery SE7 new it was $42800.
Now I'm sure its not worth more than $6k .
Over the last 18 months I have kept good records to see what it cost to run
a old Land Rover and here it is.
1. Fuel and lubricants 31 cents per mile.
2. Parts and as I do my own work no labor 28 cents per mile.
These numbers do not include replacing the rear drive shaft to rid myself of the
rubber U joint or the replacement of the windshield or the molding that holds it.
or any other upgrades.
This may look high but it is a 10 year old truck.
It would seem that all rubber needs to be replaced at this time not just the brake lines.
One O2 sensor failed (all changed at 85K) water pump, brakes, hoses,
atf cooler lines, oil cooler lines, rear windows seals, fan belt,wipers,
oil, filters, gear oils,Atf.
This will give you a idea of what I did and counted.
Now what you need to know is that my Disco is kept ready to head out on a expedition,
not that I have that much time to go but when I do I'm ready.
The back up parts that I keep are not counted.
This was over 23000 miles.

The windows seals I had done.
The guy that did my windshield needed some work done on his car so
we did a labor swap.
I was told that with the plastic removed from the inside rear windows that
it would be $20 per window so $60 my alpine window seals are ok.
I would have it done.

Okay. I've heard this from every 96'er out there---water pump, o2 sensors, new cat, etc etc.
Please see below---Should I be scared....?
Purchased in 2000 with 52575 miles on it, now I've got 120k+ miles and all i have replaced:
engin valve replacement (warranty) (1x-done while 1st owner had it as well)
fuel tank (recall) (1x)
driver side regulator (1x)
coupling on the rear diff (1x)
speed sensor (1x)
steering lock (1x)
front left caliper (1x)
pads (3x)
cat-back (1x)
thermostat (2x)
1 o2 sensor (1x)
shocks (changed to bilsteins)
tires (2x)
plugs (2x) platinum +4
wires (1x)-magnecor
KN air filter, but i'm getting the paper one back in this week.
EVERYTHING else is original...h20 pump, oil pump, rotors etc etc
usual maintenance done of course-using all synthetic oil and brake fluids. only use high octane fuel with techron fuel additive added every other month as recommended by dealer (have been doing that since engine valves were replaced due to carbon build up). a few other things, not mechanically related (mirror, light covers etc)
am i just spreading the love thickly, or is she due for extensive repairs and i've just been lucky?

I had have not had any large repairs that were not warranty.
Never had to have the cat's changed, never had a ABS problem( not a and
with normal maintenance I would think I will not have any big things go wrong.
From what I see when I work on most peoples cars is that they have put off the little things
that led to big problems it's just a O'2 sensor then it's the cat ran to rich for to long and so on.
I have not done much that is not on the service list at the miles 30/60/ ect.
