Mine just sounds like the anti-lock brakes are kicking in, which is sort of what is happening...

Hill descent is mostly useless with the exception of long snowy inclines. The issue is that HDC itself regulates the vehicle to IIRC something like 7.3 mph, useless. It's far too fast for most situations.

On the other hand, the LR4 and other newer Rovers have selectable speed from 1-10mph or so that works extremely well.

But if you're seriously off-roading, you'd never use HDC in most any situation unless you just wanted to give your right foot some breathing time.

If it is working you should hear ABS noises and NO beeping. You may just be in low range and a low gear which is also an effective method of descending a steep grade without locking the wheels.

while descending the hill with low range and HDC the vehicle maintained speeds below 10mph until I disengaged the HDC, the vehicle began to pick up speed slowly. Seems to be working fine. While engaged a green HDC icon blinks and beebs until it is disengaged.

"If HDC has been selected but the system's operating criteria are not met (i.e. gearbox still in high range or vehicle speed too high), the information light will flash and the warning chime will sound continuously.

Wrong pages but I got your point. So what do I need now? A diagnostic tool that can read HDC fault codes? Light has not turned amber yet nor does it stay on. HDC appears to work but the manual mentioned a fade out so Ive got no idea what to do check, or do to make it function the way it is suppose to.

Found this thread in the search and Im having the same problem then: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...control-36531/

But here is a description of how I engaged the HDC: Drove to the top of my hill, came to a complete stop and engaged low range. Then I engaged the HDC and began to accelerate just enough to push the vehicle until gravity took over and pushed the truck down the hill. I let off the gas. Started out in drive then shifted the transmission to 2nd and it appeared to slow the vehicle down, not letting it go past 10 mph. During this time the green HDC icon in the upper left corner of the cluster was blinking and a constant chime until I disengaged it near the bottom of the hill. I noted that after disengaging HDC despite being in low range in 2nd gear the vehicle began to speed up slowly.

So one member in the linked thread said something about you have to already be moving down a hill before you engage the HDC, is this true? I dont remember reading that in the manual or rave. But apparently im not meeting all the requirements because the green light continues to flash and the chiming. Any help would be appreciated. But i will try the experiment again today on my way to and from work. This time I will engage low range and 3rd gear then begin the descent BEFORE I engage the HDC and see if that changes the results. Maybe Ill record the process.

No, you can engage before heading down hill. Like mentioned, accelerate until you crest the hill and then let off. Or start in the middle of the hill and just let go of brakes. Vehicle should start to move and then the brakes will kick in and keep you around 5mph or so. While accelerating, it's not working, but as soon as you let off gas, it should slow back down to 5mph or so.

HDC is like cruise control, you can't touch the brake or it will disable.

Can you hear your ABS system work when you're on a steep grade with HDC on? It's a weird sound that you'd be able to identify.

Whoops, accidentally linked to the '04 manual. It's 131 & 132 in the '03 manual :/
