Default couple questions on head gaskets...

is there a certain mileage on a used Disco 2 that you can assume that these have been replaced?... im trying to decide whether it makes more sense to buy a 01-02 with lower mileage (50-70k) or a higher mileage 90-120k with the head gaskets already being replaced. Is there a way to tell on a use Disco if in fact they have been replaced or will need to be soon? thanks

It can happen in the low 30K range or not until 100K plus.
No, there is no way to tell if the gaskets have been replaced before.
What would you use a D2 for?

I'd go for the lower mileage and just be prepared to pay for the head gaskets. A good independent mechanic can do the job for about $1100, and in the long run it just doesn't make sense to buy a truck with an extra 50k on the clock just to save the cost of the head gasket job; if it's not the head gaskets your Rover will invent another reason for you to spend money on her!

For the most part, the 99D2's thru the 01's are pretty much the same as far as features go so if money is a issue stay with the 99 or 2000, they all look the same.
If you find something that catches your eye, tell us about it along with a price just in case you have any questions.

im looking at an 01 silver Disco 2 SE7 w/ 49k miles. He is asking 9k which i know too is too much. The rear air has been replaced by coils, single owner, and dealer serviced w/ records. Is there anything i could ask the dealership about the head gaskets to determine what the future holds on the truck? All the talk about gasket replacement on this site makes me nervous. I wouldnt mind doing it but certainly wouldnt want to pay 8k for an 01 to then have to dish out another 2k immediately. What do you guys think?

Mileage is right, but you will likely have to replace head gaskets within the next 15k. I bought my '04 w/ 43k on it and replaced head gaskets at 45k. Additionally, you've got the big service coming up at 60k.

He's way over-priced, but it is one-owner and dealer-serviced with records so that does command something of a premium. I'd still look to be at 6k though. Or, better yet, why don't you buy Nate's truck from Bottorf Fabrication? It's an '03, already has a new engine, has good shocks and lift, bumpers, winch, etc... He'd let it go for under 8k, I know that for certain!

Most dealers always lie as soon as their mouths start moving, and you would trust them?
To answer your question, at that mileage, chance are the gaskets have not yet been done.
If you get nervous about something as common as head gaskets, you shouldn't be buy a Rover in the first place, or as far as that goes, a Toyota, they have had more head gasket issues then Rover could ever have.

The truck is priced a little high but with that mileage, that is a jewel of a truck. If you don't buy it, let us know where it is located, I can tell you for sure it will be gone in one day.
