Of course there is the ultimate option - stick a diesel engine in the D2, like a TD5, and have a relatively trouble free power plant with lots of torque.

Not legal here in the States. And for the amount of money you would spend you can install a motor built with tophat liners.

As a matter of interest why is the TD5 not legal in the US? I'm genuinely baffled.

I believe an engine has to be emissions tested/certified by the EPA or whomever in order to be legal.

D2's are all OBD2 vehicles so they can't have their engines changed or they won't be compliant. If you live in a state with no emissions testing you can get away with it but you can't sell it.

No, but the smell of fish, diesel and bird **** may have had an damaging impact on my brain!

I ask all these questions because Im still learning. I know its only a matter of time before my Rover V8 needs to be replaced and I dont want to wait until that happens to frak out and start asking questions. By then I would like to be prepared with the money and a wealth of information which I hope will help me make the decision on how to address it. Rebuild, replace, or use a different engine etc.

I'm willing to bet your engine will last you to 200k and by that time you could easily have the 5-6k to buy to an engine with top hat liners and beefed up cam shaft.

Unfortunately it was never certified for the USA and this is the #1 biggest issue every US Disco owner has to contend with all Discovery's. The dated OEM V8 Buick design is simply a plaqued piece of crap timebomb. Had the US have offered the TD5 we would not have so much to complain about on these forums except for diesel exhaust soot staining bumpers as well as the negative influence that the other manufacturers that purchased Landrover added and of course they all leak excessively! Jeeps probably would not have been as popular either. But it is what it is and a TopHat lined rebuild is as good as it is gonna get for everyone that eventually has to replace their V8, unless you can get a Shortblock Chevy or Ford crate motor and pass emissions.
