Default D gear indicator takes a moment to appear on dash. Normal??

Hi guys,
A week ago I had the m and s blinking issue, limp mode. Changed the battery and it's been working fine since that.

Today I started the car and when I selected D gear the dash indicator took a while to display the D letter. All
other gears displayed fine. This just happened with the D...

I must say that even though the D gear indicator was missing, the car drove perfectly fine on D.

Now I can't remember if this is a common occurrence or this is actually the beginning of a problem..

Thanks

you say you charged your battery and it went away, makes scene.
but what drained your battery down in the first place and is this a sign of it happening again

There's a winch installed I never use... Could be it?

Fellipe, take a look at this post by me from a couple of weeks ago, then the full thread.

In that thread we were talking about the P not appearing in the display, but the same root cause may be causing your D to not display.

Many thanks for your input

In your case the P indicator didn't appear at all? My D appears, it just takes four or five secs...

Not sure that matters. The PRND321 display is from the ECU. The ECU gets its input from the XYZ switch. Somewhere in that chain is the fault. XYZ to ECU to Instrument panel. The XYZ has a separate output for each gear position. If it wasn't the XYZ I'd think you'd have none of the other indicators working.

A lot of other Disco owners leap to assuming any trans problem (i.e. M+S lights) that can't be solved with a new battery or correcting battery connection problems must be the XYZ. But in this case, where the D indicator is not working, it may actually be the XYZ.

The better diagnostic tools can read the individual XYZ outputs to confirm the diagnosis.

Thanks.. But unfortunately the m and s lights blinked again today (

my question is: If it's the xyz switch, why changing the battery solved the problem for if only for a week? What do you think?

If changing the battery fixed the problem for a week, and then it returned, I would think that either your alternator isn't putting out enough to keep the battery charged and power the vehicle, or you may have something draining your battery over time. Does it take any longer to start the vehicle now compared to right after you changed the battery?

have your battery load tester and your charging system check it should put out no less than 13.5 volts or you will continue to have problems. anything less than 13.5 the tranny computer starts acting up, it possible its an XYZ switch but at the price of then it would be the last thing i replaced.
