Default D2 ECU Flash

Hey Guys, Im having my D2 engine rebuilt the proper way. I have seen several companies advertising flashing the ECU for a lil extra power and a lil better mpg. Has anyone done this to their D2? Is it just sales hype or does it really make a differnce? Maybe Disco Mike can answer this? Thanks for the help! ....Ben

Is it for V8 or TD5?
The Disco owners I've ran into overseas with TD5 engines swear by it saying it's a definite "need-to-have" for their engines.
As for the V8's (like I have) I haven't found many owners who did this. There are a few companies here in England named CelticTuning.co.uk and TornadoSystems.com who do V8 chipping/ECU upgrades. The costs are high from $600 to $800 and you have to mail them your ECU.
There was a company that was north of Washington DC that I was going to check out when I lived in Georgia. They were half of the price but I lost their information.

Like the poster above said, if it's a td5 do it. As for a v8, in my experience it's a waste of money on a stock motor. The gas savings will never pay for the upfront cost and the hp increase will be minimal at best.

But I’ve heard you’ll lose that clunk going into reverse. So there’s that.

My 04 never clunked or made any noise going into reverse, or any gear.

I would still like to have my ecu flashed(I can do several Suzuki ecu's with software I have), it's really interesting what can be improved electronically on modern vehicles.
After I get my 04 running again, and fix a few more things on it, an ecu flash is still on my "to-do" list.

I have done a lot of ECU programming, gas and diesel. Diesel - YES!! Gas, it depends. GM engines are fueled extremely rich at WOT and have lots of torque management, so pulling that off makes a big difference. What I have seen so far in my testing with Disco's monitoring the 02's is they do not go super rich at WOT and I doubt they have much torque management (not enough torque to need it). I doubt they significantly lean out the low torque AFR, so they probably don't improve fuel economy that much.

Read up on EFILive or HP tuners forums, you will learn a lot about ECU flashing and the amount of power and fuel economy difference tunes can make.

Its a V8....thanks for the info. I did see some of the companies you listed. Thats what got me interested. I'll do some more research

Thanks for the reply. I have a feeling that for these vehicles that it wouldnt make much difference. I flashed the ecu on my sportbike and what a difference it made. I'll do a lil more research
