Yeah, having a snorkel wasn't really on my radar either...until the drowning. And actually...I didn't go in that deep of water, in my opinion, to get the results that occurred. I'd read about Best4X4's adventures during Harvey (snorkel-less) and thought my little mud hole would be no problem. Boy was I wrong...my airbox was complete full of mud and water and the filter was literally blown apart. Now, after two oil/filter changes, one mass airflow sensor (and another on the way for back up), air filter and two cans of throttle body cleaner...she's up and running again. $300.00 spent on repairs and $20.00 on homemade snorkel...afterwards. The latter could have negated to former, if things would have been reversed.

Oh well, no crying over spilled milk here...just learn from "my" mistakes.

Brian.

Hi Brian

I never go places that I'll need a snorkel as it screws up the air intake track too much. If offroading I use the old Pajero and for long distances the very comfortable D4 (LR4) but the D2 is generally used for a daily run about hack and tow truck. I will never sell the old D2 as I've owned it from new and it owes me nothing now so it'll see it's days out with me or vice versa.

Some of the best places need a bit of off road gear to visit. It we didn't push around the next corner, think of all you could miss.

In many cases I agree, 'Snorkels are 95% for looks in many cases' especially when no deep wading or desert dust is encountered. They are a common 'add-on' feature in the UK and most never even venture offroad .

Hi Greg

I have been using my old 1995 Pajero with it's 2.8 4M40 TD engine since 2007 but unfortunately I cracked the cylinder head when the head gasket failed awhile ago. It's presently in bits and being rebuilt/repaired by me. Just another project and then back into service green laning and generally running around.

Good luck to your son with his Pajero restoration.

Unless you live in a desert or only drive on logging roads, you're a 95%er. Snorkels don't do anything on trails or streets
