Default D2 Value Opinions Wanted

I've been searching more and more for D2's for our next vehicle and prices seem to be all over the place.
I'm very curious to gain some insight to the value of one in this particular condition.
Obviously I dont expect a nice D2 to sell for KBB but is this really worth the asking price??
Almost double one that hasnt had this motor work done.

If you aren't mechanically inclined, and want to daily drive a Dll...buy the best one you can find. Clean frame, reliable engine work done, clean inside and out, maintenance up to date, and drives/runs like new.

Sure, try and beat this guy down a bit ($1,5/$2000), especially if it's been up for sale a long time.

Folks are going to suggest buying one (3.5/4 thousand) and doing the work yourself, but unless you can do the work and have the time...forget it! I've only been on this board for a few short years and l can't count the amount of owners that have become frustrated, over burdened or overwhelmed with projects gone bad...and just slipped away into the sunset.

The engine work that has been done on the rover you posted is pushing 4/5 grand, so if you add the cost of a "regular, run of the mill" Dll...you are in the ball park.

Anytime you buy an older vehicle...it is a crap shoot...period.

I'm mechanically inclined but we'll sell one vehicle to get another so I'm not interested in having a crap load of work to do up front.
My understanding is what you commented - if I get one too cheap, I'll end up in for more than a bargained for because it hasnt been taken care of.
I was just concerned as this price is pretty inflated, but given the sheer amount of work done, I agree with your analysis..

I appreciate the input....

FWIW - my Volvo XC70 is 15 years old and my Honda Insight is 18 years old - I dont mind getting my hands dirty

Yeah, that helps. But, there's nothing worse than buying something and having it sit for the next four or five months...while you rebuild or have an engine rebuilt. We got hoodwinked on our first purchase, nice couple, seemed honest...but that was not the truth...whatever they poured in the engine to quiet it down...worked long enough to get it down the road until l changed the oil...sat in the garage for four months waiting to find a good replacement. And, I've watched many a rebuild here go south, because the "mechanically inclined" person wasn't fluent in engine rebuilding and missed or didn't totally understand what they were looking at. Not picking on any particular person here, just from reading old post out of boredom. Rebuilding engines reliable is not child's play. And having someone else do it...is expensive.

My opinion, it's a nice looking truck, but still way over priced at $12,000 with 120k miles. I dont care what they say they have done to it, $11,000 is too dang high. Again, just my opinion

this part of the ad I find highly suspicious, "The engine block was removed and pressure tested for liner leaks. Faulty liners were replaced with"top hat" style and all original liners are "pined" to the block so they stay in place for keeps. "

from what I'm getting here, they found major issues with the engine, they use the word "LinerS", with an S, like they found numerous problems, yet they only replace some of the Liners? Why not do the job right and replace all the liners instead of just a few? Sounds like corners were cut right there and they are making it sound like no expense was spared.

Good question! Simply put, its a matter of cost. A top hat liner installation costs about$250-300, so it would add $2000 or more to the engine cost to do so. If it was necessary to do 8 liners, we'd do so but in every case the problem lies with one or two of the 4 internal cylinders (2-7) and 70% of the time its is #4. The reason for this can be found at an excellent video from RPI V8 engines of England at
. So we use top hat liners to seal microscopic block cracks that have formed behind the liners in those center cylinders BTW, we disagree with RPI that a cracked block cannot be saved. We have used a combination of top hat liners and chemical sealant quite effectively). We use the pining method to cure the liner lift issue. Top hatting will certainly eliminate liner lift, but pining does just as effectively at a 10th of the cost.

You got two ways of going about D2s:

1. Buy the cheapest you can get, rip everything out, rebuild from scratch yourself. Will require lots of $$$, personal time, and space.
2. Buy the best you can get that requires minimal amount of work. Basically, a step short of full-frame restoration.

Many trucks, unfortunately, fall somewhere in the middle and close to the option #1 while price-wise being close to option #2. Stay away.

I heard the 2004's were made with worn tooling and have oil pump issues.

That place in Alpharetta is where I bought my Disco 2 from when I lived in Smyrna. You can definitely haggle them down on the price.
Calvin and Jay are stand up guys. They sell a bunch of newer and older Land Rovers that they work on also. Calvin and I would talk for hours about buying a Defender 110.
