Default Dash camera install

I found lots of instructions for D4 and D5 dash cam installs, but nothing for D2s. I have a dash cam with a USB C power cord, 5v 1amp requirement. I would like it to turn on automatically when the truck is on. Could I just tap into the dome lights above the mirror? Or is it better to run a line all the way to the fuse box and put in an add a fuse?

I tried previously to wire a charger but it never worked. Could have been a bad power cord, the tapped the wrong wire, etc
assuming I am cutting the DC end off the power cord, which wire should go where? I am thinking this should be easy, but I struggle with electric.

thanks for the help

The overhead lights are logic controlled, so probably not the best source. I installed mine at the top of the windshield and I'm pretty sure I used the garage door opener power source. In any case, there are several things up behind the front dome light and one of them is definitely key-switched. Just use a multimeter to find out which one.

thanks. I should be able to just splice into the garage opener wires? When you cut the usb c, it was pretty obvious which wire was which? Thanks

Like I said, use a meter to check for power before cutting/splicing into anything. Check with key on and key off. The Land Rover Electrical Library will also help you work out which wires are going to be most likely to be useful.

I didn't cut the USB wire. I was able to fit a USB power outlet behind the dome light, and just plugged the USB lead into it.

Most of the voltage supplied to various components is 12V, so make sure that is compatible with your camera first, USB is 5V so you will have to either install a voltage regulator or install a USB header and plug directly in to that. There is an open port (s13) on the interior fuse box which is a switched 12V source, alternatively you could tap in to the mirror power (also switched) if mounting the camera up high.

Yeah, it may have been the mirror power that I tapped into. And like I said, I installed a USB power outlet and plugged into that. You can't wire USB directly to a 12v supply.

So I wired a USB plug to the 13 fuse, the cigar lighter fuse. This cable works to charge a phone, but does not work to power the camera. If i plug the camera into the cigar lighter with the provided cable, the camera works fine.

Any advice on what could be causing it to not work? Could I somehow not be providing enough amperage? The 15amp fuse should be sufficient?

Apprecaite any advice.

The fuse isn't the issue. USB is 2.1A or 5A, so you're well below that. Most USB cameras require 5A; maybe your unit is only giving 2.1A.

Here is what I used for my dashcam:
Amazon Amazon

Might not work for your brand of dashcam but the keyword search you want to use is: dashcam hardwire kit

Got it, the plug itself is not producing enough power. Mine does require 5A to run. I did just read the fine print on the plugs I bought, they are 2.1amp. Thanks for pointing that out, I was losing my mind.

Could I cut up a current power cord that does work? simply cut off one end and splice it into the wiritng I have installed?
