Default Dash Gear Indicator?

Solved: under "INSTRUMENT PACK" transmission setting was set to MANUA; once I changed it to AUTO, it resolved the issue. Thanks all!

Hi,

My son has a 2001 D2, and I got a Nanocom so we could disable the superlock and program used keys now, and use it for diagnostics down the road.

I was messing with the Nanocom yesterday and now my son mentioned that he can't see the gear indicator in the dash anymore. He correlates the disappearance with my mucking about with the Nanocom, but isn't entirely sure of that.

I looked on this site, and it results for this symptom return a lot about failing XYZ switch. The thing is, when I test the gears while observing the settings the Nanocom, the Gear switch W, Gear switch X, Gear Switch Y and Gear Switch Z values change as I would expect for each gear position. It seems to be reading correctly. And it drives normally...not stuck in 3rd gear limp mode.

Also, battery is in good shape, fully charged, alternator putting out around 14v DC.

So two questions:
(1) Is there anything I could have done fooling with the Nanocom to cause the display to stop showing the gear on the dash?
(2) Are there other culprits that I can look at for the source of the missing gear position indicator?

Thanks!

The instrument panel LCD gear indicator and the shifter bezel red LED gear indicators are both controlled by the BCU. Are the shifter bezel gear indicators illuminating correctly?

With the nanocom BCU settings you want to make sure it list your vehicle as AUTO vs Manual. To learn more on how to go thru menus or use the nanocom I highly recommend going to their site and using the emulator. It's like using the unit but you don't have to be connected to your LR. They also have great tech support and a list of every option/setting with full descriptions.

Hi, yes the indicators on the shift bezel are working as expected.

I'll check out the emulator. Thanks.

I checked and the nanocom.is set to Auto. (edit for future searchers: I only checked one place and the transmission setting is in two separate locations - the important one for this is in the INSTRUMENT PACK menu)

Also, the sport mode button doesn't do anything anymore...

I'm going to try to change the transmission to manual and then to auto and save it.

A dead Hi/Low range switch will stop the mode switch from working

Solved - @Best4x4 had it right. I didn't realize that there are two places where transmission type is set - the one that I was looking at before is under "TRANS-LOCK-WARN" and was set to AUTO, the other one is under "INSTRUMENT PACK" and this was set to MANUAL.

The configuration switch in the INSTRUMENT PACK is labeled "TRANSMISSION" and the options are MANUAL and AUTO.

Somehow (no doubt through my fat fingering it while mucking around) that had been set to MANUAL.

Once I set it to AUTO and saved the settings to the BCU, everything was back to normal - the gear indicator now shows up on the dash display, and the Sport Mode button works (lights up a green gear/S light on the dash when engaged).

Thanks for the guidance everyone. I wouldn't have been able to solve this without you.

Thank you.

That switch also checked out via the Nanocom diagnostics and was working as designed.
