Default DI driveshaft on DII???

OK here's one I've not seen posted before. My 1999 DII (97K miles) has a DI driveshaft on the front. The last service paperwork (RoversOnly shop) that came with the truck made mention of it and called it a Range Rover shaft. From the pictures on the AB sight I have a DI or Range Rover Classic front driveshaft. There are grease fitting for the two u-joints and the top slip-joint.The rear shaft is OEM with grease nipples for the universal and slip-joint. The truck runs fine and there are no ill vibrations.

The question I have is - is this a good thing or not? Leave it alone or replace it with an aftermarket cardon shaft? If I had to replace it I would be faced with paying the core charge. Your thoughts... Thanks, Mark V.

The D1 shaft is not as strong as the D2.

so there is nothing to worry about like needing the OEM cardon jointed shaft? The DII is for my 18 year old son who doesn't do much in the way of off roading. Everthing seems tight and there are greasable u-joints which we are lubing.

Thanks Mike - look for me to call you for some 60K service advice this or next week. Be Safe, Mark V.

The D2 needs the double cardon for proper drive shaft angle, should be changed out.

Mike, kinda related question. Would you suggest putting a D2 shaft on a D1 if lifting?

Thanks Mike, that's what I was looking for - specific advice/direction. I had a feeling that the double cardon had a further purpose beyond just strength. So now I have to move onto plan II or III. I can either purchase a used shaft off fleabay and have it rebuilt, or plan III, would be to pay for one of the aftermarket (ie T.Woods) shafts. Seems as though the Dodge Durango direct bolt on replacement doesn't really work. I don't mind the bucks, after all the Disco has to see my son through five years of college; then as an engineer he is on his own for repairs... Be Safe, Mark V.

So I am the only unlucky one to have a DI front driveshaft (non cardon) on a DII? But now the story has taken another strange twist.

We got a replacement DII (double cardon) driveshaft and ran into a snag installing it. My son tells me that the bolt pattern for the flange at the transfer case and the cardon end of the new drivesaft won't match up. How could this be? Does the LT230 have different (front) flanges for the DI and DII? I can imagine someone just installing the non cardon driveshaft but to also change the transfer case fron flange too? Really not liking the idea of having to swap out a transfer case flange just to replace the front driveshaft - but we will do whatever it takes... Be Safe, Mark V.

If it has worked for 5 years with the DI drive shaft then why wont it work for another 5 years? Seem's like a lot of hassle for nothing to me.

Spike, I was thinking it was a good idea to follow senior leadership advice...
