Default Did I pay too much for my 98 disco?

I paid 4000 for it 120k on the clock... had some serious issues, hadn't been driven in over a year... didn't start... Electical issues... major fluid leaks... ran horrible when started...

I put maybe 800 of my own dollars into it and it's perfect now, looks and runs pretty much new... so did I over pay?

here is a pic of it

I think you could have bought it for maybe 500 - 1000 cheaper since it had problems. Did you try to go that low?

Sounds like you did well. So what did you fix exactly?

It "shows" well!-- I think you did okay, as long as there are no other major issues looming. Read my tech info pages on my site at www.eurotekapg.com to give you a primer on what to look for.

enjoy it!

I paid $2900.00 for a 1997 at the dealer... they called it a "tow away" but I drove it 200 miles home. (after putting a new coolant bottle on it) Here's what mine needed:

right exhaust manifold
rear sunroof screws and alignment
front brakes and bearings repacked
rear step bolt
heater Core
hood decal - to cover oxidized paint
drivers and passengers seat switches (I ended up rebuilding them)
and a bunch of little interior and exterior trim pieces and clean up

I'm in the vehicle about $4500 including an Old Man Emu Heavy duty spring and shock kit and steering damper. I also put a A frame brush bar on it with hella driving lights. I think the dealer just wanted do dump this one. It had no heater and sounded really loud with the cracked exhaust manifold. Hopefully this will give you something to compare to. Sounds like you did pretty good though.

I think you did well. I have seen 98's advertised at LR dealers for as much as 10k. Now it will be really worth it if you take it off the road often!

The owner wanted almost 10k for it, he said it was in, "mint condition." It was his wifes car and when she got a new one, they parked the disco under a tree and it went unsold for pretty much a year... When I went to look at it it didn't start, the electrical system was all fouled, some of the doors were frozen and the list goes on and on... To say the least he was ready to negotiate at this point as he was unaware of all the issues... Lowest he'd go on that day was 7k, I talked to him for 2 months going back and forth until he finnally said, "take it for 5k," I said, "will you do 3500?" He said, "no 4500 is my lowest," I came back with 4000 and there you have it.

The major issues were all the vacuum lines were rotted, battery was dead, fuel filter was trash, injectors needed a cleaning, fuel rails needed a cleaning, spark plugs and wires needed to be replaced... A small tuning issue at the TB, then a bunch of small things like getting the alarm and remote locks working, doors opening, all the dash lights working etc.. I did all the work myself so it only took a weekend and a small amout of cash.

Not too bad then, the outside looks great plus you have a OEM brush guard and some aftermarket lighting. He was crazy for asking 10k even if it were running. There was a 96 out here with 120k that I almost picked up that was in great condition for 4k.
