did my mechanic kill my coils?
Wondering how hardy the D2 coils are. I had a maechanic unfamiliar with LR's install my plug wires and working from the manual he got the firing pattern wrong. He then went through a few more trial and errors, each time getting it wrong. He would fire the truck for just a few seconds, seeing right away from the rough idle and multiple misfire codes that the pattern was wrong. I finally gave him the RAVE wiring diagram and he got it right away, claiming the manual diagram was confusing. BTW- he installed them using the "how to install wires w/ out removing the IM" thread." Maybe he got a few other things wrong...
So once he correctly installed my brand new Magnacors and NGK iridium plugs it seemed OK but still a little rough, and a misfire code stuck around for a few days. Then the rough idle seemed to magically dissapear, along with the code.
I kept driving the truck for a few months since all seemed well now, but noticing the MPG was still crappy (my initial reason for swapping perfectly good 25k OEM dealer-installed plugs and wires)- but then the misfire code came back (not a multiple p1300, but I think a 303 or cylinder three from what I remember) and the idle started to get progressively worse.
My newest mechanic now recommended replacing the coil pack, claiming these coils often go bad around my mileage (80k) and are often the fault behind poor MPG and rough idle.
So I had him do it and now all is well again, and have finally seen an increase in MPG from about 9mpg up to 11 or so (lead foot.) The idle is as good as a an older V8 should be IMO.
SO my question is- did those trial runs with criss-crossed wires kill my coil? I think this because I never threw a coil code and Disco Mike called BS on my newest mechanics claim that the coils automatically go bad. I guess other possibilities might exsist like poorly seated plug ends, bad wire routing, incorrectly re-installed SAI, etc?

I'll put in my 2 cents here, but I'm sure I will draw criticism.
My personal experience with NGK Iridiums has not been good. I tried them at least twice with the same results...crappy running engine and **** poor mileage. I use Plat +4 from Bosch and have never had a problem. Others have had great results with the NGK's, but I have not.
