you really would have to post better pictures of what is really in the pans.

Gear parts look correct, but not oil pump gears, imho.
I dont see how pieces that big could make it out of the pump ( thru the engine oil passages and back into the oil pan.

My guess the teeth we are seeing are off timing chain gear.
it also looks like part of the thrust bearing is laying their also.
an is that a single needle bearing lay in the pan?

6k for a used motor is crazy you can get a rebuilt with a 3-years 36 warranty for that.

lay all that stuff out on some white cardboard and post more pix.

That is a shame about your engine. Think about buying an entirely new vehicle and keeping your current one for parts. For $6000 you could do it easily.

Sounds as if you've been 'topped up' by these guys. To send you away with a potentially defective engine is unforgivable having just taken $2.5K off of you. I am amazed they even offered you a used engine for $6K with only 30K miles, it's very unlikely it's original and more likely a used recon engine if indeed it's even kosher. Initially I'd find out from them hard evidence of the provenance of the engine and a price for the engine only. If it's kosher and a resonable price ($2.5-3.0K) maybe take the engine and your truck to a genuine LR indy garage as I'm sure many of these guys on here can point you in the right direction. In all honesty for $6K maybe plus a bit more you can buy another truck complete of the same or similar year.

As an aside, PM Paul Grant who breaks LR's and see what he has available and how much a good engine would sell for.

Sorry to hear of your woes but I'm afraid women going into many garages is like a lamb to the slaughter, even many men suffer the same come to that.

anytime valve covers, timing covers come off, you change the oil.

If you can take the covers off and post some pics.

I wonder what isn't in the pan

Whats the chance they drained the oil before doing the job and forgot to fill it back up?

First off, sorry to hear about your situation. That sucks. I don't know that much about engines to tell you what happened, but I'd recommend getting in touch with an attorney and having the payment on your card stopped. All of it sounds really fishy to me. Trustworthy mechanics are hard to come by anymore. Especially when it comes to Land Rovers. Most "general" mechanics see L.R.'s as an opportunity to WAY overcharge for something simple like "headlight washer fluid".

You'll get a lot of good help on here. There are several members that know what they are talking about and can walk you through any and all problems you may be experiencing.

That did cross my mind also but it wouldn't have got 10 miles with zero oil.

That's the worst advise you could give. The credit card company would not reverse the charges, being that the repair was done and signed off by the customer, and the new problem is unrelated to the previous repair. Doing this would also **** off the shop owner, who is the only person that can give a partial refund, or put some of what was paid on a repair into a new engine. Like the majority of post repair problems, the customer is at fault for not bringing the vehicle to a properly accredited/reputable shop.
The vehicle was obviously misdiagnosed, can you prove it in court? Is it worth attorney fees?

Sell the truck on craigslist for 1000 bucks and move on.

This collection of feedback has been very helpful & I appreciate it. Re: the invoice for $2500.00 - they did reverse the charge after it broke down. They did not offer to incorporate that cost into the new engine estimate. The new engine estimate does include the install, but again, I will not be doing that...with this mechanic anyway. The issue with that invoice is, getting the truck out of there & what their position is on it. It is my strong belief there is no coincidence they did this work & 10 miles later she's dead. The truck ran beautifully before this. It just had a tick & I wanted to take care of that for fear I'd end up in the shoes I am now if I didn't. I sent them an e-mail to open dialogue about the invoice & getting it out of there. We'll see how they handle this. I had asked them before to save all of the shavings & pieces. They said they did. Once I get those, I will post better pics. I absolutely love my truck & previous to this it drove beautifully, it's also cosmetically immaculate. I'd like to keep it if it's reasonable to do so. If it's not, I will move on. The not adding oil crossed my mind as well. Especially given the sticker on the windshield was the same from the last time they changed the oil. Would I go to court? pay an attorney? I'm not in that mind set at this time. Would I pay an expert to go through it completely & see if we can figure out exactly what it is that went wrong? Sure. If this mechanic is confident in the work they did, would they object to that? We'll see. As far as this being my fault for not choosing the mechanic wisely, they specialize in foreign. I trusted them. Here's the shop if you care to look Home - The Little Speed Shop

If you want to tow the truck from Rochester to my shop in Wall NJ, I would have no problem with taking the engine apart to find out what happened and why. I have written letters for customers who had other shops mess their trucks up and it seems to work out well. It may just need a new timing cover and rod and main bearings. It's always good to call out a shop you believe has done bad work. It's also great that the shop refunded your money without a huge ordeal. I ASSumed the car was at a jiffy lube type of shop and that you hadn't done any research.
