Diesel and Gas Engine Oil Test Results
This may allay some old myths and folklore. These diesel and gas turbo engine results are eye openers
Best ?Diesel Oil Test - Best Motor Oil

Best ?Diesel Oil Test - Best Motor Oil
So that solves the Rotella T mystery:
The onset of thermal breakdown is approximately 250*
NOTE: This new Rotella T has SIGNIFICANTLY MORE zinc than the OLD Rotella T, NOT LESS as is often claimed. And these two Rotella oils were Lab tested more than a month apart. So, their component quantities had no chance of being mixed up. This new Rotella’s wear protection capability is just slightly BETTER than the OLD Rotella. Therefore, the new Rotella is NOT the junk some have claimed.
But, umm, it seems to say that it is dumb to run diesel oils in gas Engines.
Thanks for posting, OffroadFrance!

It's a very long read, but if people read it with open mind pretty useful,

The new Rotella T is called T4, not just Rotella T or did they just use an old graphic and they really tested the T4.
What was special about the "old" Rotella T was that it is $12.98/gal at Wal-Mart.

Not helpful to a dope like me.
I read it, then did a search for "bottom line". The bottom line seems to be that zinc is not a big deal, thinner oils are better, oil pressure is a bogus measure (oil flow is the right measure), and Rotella may have gotten slightly better but it still sucks. Oh, and if you use H-Beam rods instead of I-Beam rods, you are a ninny.
And from the first article, diesel oils are inferior for wear protection because you have to use so much oil (so it has to be cheaper). I find that greatly distressing not only because I use Rotella in my Rover but I also use it in a Ford Diesel that I plan to last a lifetime, and a bunch of other vehicles from big rigs to coupe's. Having said that, I have a 35 year old car (diesel) that has not worn out, nor has my 17 year old rover, nor have has any other car I have ever owned. So I am not sure where all of this "wear" manifests. Is the blog for hot rods?!
It seems that we should be running gasoline engine oil in everything.
And I haven't even touched on all fo the ridiculous certifications that each oil picks and chooses.
Thoroughly confused.

I've been checking bob is the oil guy regularly and haven't seen a virgin anyalist of the new t4 and still waiting to find the zinc levels. Until that time, I'll either use Lucas or royal purple
wow...... and with one fell swoop , the oil debate comes to an end.
Now, if you excuse me, I have to go change the oil in my 911. Its got T6 synthetic sitting in the sump as we speak..
The rover is gonna have to wait til the headgaskets get done.

I'm with you. Makes my head hurt and turns my Rotella/diesel oil/ZDDP flat tappet engine notions completely upside down.
From my casual reading it looks like the new formulation of 0W-40 Mobil 1 "FS" European Car Formula should be what we are running...
Any thoughts/comments on that particular oil in our Disco II's?
I'm running Rotella T-6 (5W-40) in the winter months here in Georgia and Rotella T-5 or Royal Purple in 15W-40 in the warmer months.
Wondering if I should just go to 0W-40 year round in the new Mobil 1 formulation now...
