Default diff fill port?!

Ok, so I crawled under my beloved rover to change the diff fluid out and I found the drain hole on the front diff w/o problem. I started to feel around for the fill hole and all I can find is this stupid little plastic plug with a slot in it about 1/3 the way up the front face of the diff. this isnt the fill hole is it?! and if it is how in the hell do I get the plastic plug out without trashing it in the process?

oh and I wanted to check the axel breather tubes while I was under there. where are they located?

thanks guys!

that's it. buy a replacement now, because odds are you will trash it taking it out. there is an aftermarket brass plug out there, but I am too lazy to google it up for you right now; sorry.

ah ha. well this is going to be fun...
thanks. i guess... (i know, it sucks being the bearer of bad news)

btw it is Great Basin Rovers that has the brass drain/fill port plugs for our rovers. I just checked their online parts catalog and it was down for maintence or some such. I emailed the guy there for prices and ordering info. I will post on here when I get a reply.

Use a wrench to undo those plastic plugs, that plastic slot does not hold. Once you have it out take it to Home Depot and look in the plumbing department for a plug that fits, you will find one there. Just don't tell them its for a car...

I actually got the plugs out without too much damage. Got the diffs drained (the stuff that came out looked like friggin' TAR and nasty tar at that) and refilled with some fresh synthetic 85w-140. I never noticed any noise or issues from my diffs in the past but I am sure that my rover appreciates the love. Even got the plastic plugs refitt without too much issue. Prolly gonna order the brass plugs when Great Basin Rovers gets back with me about price just to have them standing by for the next time I change diff fluid.

The axle breathers are on top, drivers side of each axle.
Urban Panzer has a nice write up on his web site on how to run them up to the engine bay.

I'm sorry but 20$ is an outrageous price for that plug!
