Default Diff lock engage/disengage?

Please excuse the stupid question here but which way do you shift the diff lock shifter to engage the diff lock? I ask because its been suggested that perhaps my diff lock has been engaged this entire time.... like since I first purchased the truck. If this was so then I do believe that means my Diff Lock is toast. When I purchased the truck the shifter was in the lower passenger side position. Noteably the most common position Ive seen the shifter in, in all the pictures ive seen of Disco 1 and 2's. I assumed that the lower passenger side position was the disengage position and that to engage it you had to shift it up half way than to the left (drivers side) in order to engage the diff lock.

I do have the stickers in the truck but honestly it rather confuses me. Only thing I get is that to engage the low range you shift the shifter straight up all the way.

Thanks

There are three position on the right side. Down (hi range) middle (N), up (low range. Can only be engaged when truck is in N).
Jam it hard towards the drivers side (in rather hi or low range), while moving or standing still to engage cdl.

if your CDL had been locked you would know it. you would feel your driveline binding and your tires would sqeal at every turn

Thanks all. Don had me scared for a moment there! Gotta go back and see what he was smoking cause hes the one who suggested that my CDL has been engaged this entire time. What a relieve. On another note I cannot shift over to diff lock anymore and have been trying to figure that out for some time but i can deal with that later. But the hi/low range does work GREAT and its saved my brakes and probably my life going down those ice covered hills!

Thanks again guys

the linkage might be gummed up with years of road ****, id spray it down with pb blaster and take a toothbrush to any part that should pivot or rotate see if that frees it up. if not, might be easier to take a look at it from the top down by removing the drivers compartment center covers, its easy, the only pain in the *** part is drilling out the covers pop rivets, then putting new ones in. but from there you have pretty good access to diagnos everything without crawling under the truck and doign it by feel and mirrors. actually, i dont remember it being to hard to see even from under the truck, although my truck sits pretty high up and i usually put 2 wheels on the curb when i go under
