Default diff lock-hi-low selector

I have a 1998 disco 1 reclamation project ongoing.

Head gaskets..check

frozen selector linkage...in process. (both diff and high low frozen)

I am following this excellent webpage:

http://home.twcny.rr.com/eeibooks/ro...codifflock.htm

Things are going relatively smooth (console is out) but I can't figure out how to get the **** off the lever.

I have the ratty leather boot (I plan on replacing) pulled up and over the **** but can't find the clip I had hoped to see (like my VW).

How does that bad boy come off? Sawzall, blowtorch?

Now for the bonus round:

1. emergency brake handle removal? (change the ratty leather boot).

2. Automatic transmission shift lever removal? (replace overly complicated plastic rolling lever cover)

The top trim piece on the "T" shifter pops off, use a small flat blade screw driver to pop it off, there is a nut inside the shifter.
This nut adjusts your transmission cable. Not sure but it might also remove your shifter handle.

As for the parking brake...I have no idea.

I had taken off the little trim, popped off the clip and gotten as far as getting the metric nut off before I read your reply.

The **** is still locked up on there..yes i tried turning but it is probably just jammooneed on the lever...

Tough to pry up with all that plastic below it...

Any suggestions? Sawzall, blowtorch

Here's what I did on mine, I just finished going through the process :

you don't need to take the **** out of the shifter simply put it in neutral. It will give you enough room to take out the console.

As for the handbrake; there is a pin locking the wire in place. Take it out, so your e-brake lever will move freely all the way up, allowing you to take out the console. Every joint in your system is linked by the same kind of pins.

I had to remove the plate of the tranny shifter because I broke the linkage for high/low selection. If you plan to drill out this part, it will allow you to take the linkage out by removing the little nut beside the box.

Put enough loose nut on all joints you see in you linkage and in the little box where your lever stands, let it rest for 24h. If you're not able to move it after you let it rest, add loose nut, wait, and try to move it again. That should take care of it. Let me know how things worked out

yeah i just recently did the same project... i have yet to hook my parking brake cable back up... but in louisiana there are very few hills and so its not a real rush to hook it back up... i drilled out the rivets on mine and then put some plastic screw anchors in the holes and screwed it back down so that way if i ever need to remove it again its easier... these are the anchors im talking about http://z.about.com/d/homerepair/1/5/...tic_anchor.jpg
