Default diff lock question

If I engage differential lock (dash light on, driver differently)

then jack up one wheel (front drivers side if it matters) how much should the wheel move?

Mine will move about 2/15ths of a turn back and forth...

shouldn't it be totally locked and not move at all, I still gotta test the back wheels

thanks

The transfer case is locked, not the differentials. The wheel will move a little as their is play between the pinion and ring gear. If the T-case were unlocked the wheel would spin freely.

Cheers,

Pete

so would I have an issue if the wheel does not spin freely with center diff unlocked?

You would need to roll the car for a bit before the t-case is actually unlocked. Mine usually takes several feet of rolling before the light will go out.

Cheers,

Pete

I could be wrong. The Rover diff may not allow it turn to unless both wheels (same axle) are off the ground. I think you are okay as far as your Rover is concerned. I know that one wheel can spin freely if the TC is not working and the T-case is not locked. What year Rover do you have?

Cheers,

Pete

I my humble opinion you are over thinking all of this, you got your CDL to work, all is good, enjoy the truck.

Did you try this with the transmission in neutral and not in park? My bet is you had one wheel off the ground, the transfer case unlocked and the transmission in park. The driveshaft still will not move due to the transmission park prawl holding the drivetrain from moving. Oh, the same goes when the parking brake is on too. Block the wheels on a flat surface when you try this.
