differential removal
Hello All:
Im trying to remove the rear diff from a wreck to use on my disco 2. I am having trouble getting axle out of housing. RAVE says something about removing the guide from the diff? Is that necessary to remove the axle?
thanks,
Dopedawg

No. just remove the calipers, rotors and hubs then withdraw the half shafts from the rear axle. Unbolt the diff all round and out it comes. Assuming it's in serviceable condition and the pinion seal and bearing is good there is no need to remove the rotoflex alignment spigot for which you'll need either a jury rig (plus a lot of luck) or special LR type puller tool as the spigot is sealed in with Loctite.
1) Remove rear drive shaft
2) remove wheel
3) remove brake caliper bracket and calipers as one piece and tie aside
4) Remove retaining screw holding on rotor and remove rotor
5) Unplug wheel sensor
6) Remove 4 bolts holding hub to the axle housing
7) take a rubber mallet and beat the hub until it pops out
8) slide axle out as you feed the wheel sensor wire through the hole
9) do same thing for the other side
10) unbolt the diff and remove it, Done

Seriously, X1, the diffs do weigh a lot and can mash your fingers up pretty bad.
It sometimes, not always, pays to remove the shaft as it may be in good/better condition inboard side and mates together better with the diff. It also maybe worthwhile keeping the shafts and hubs as spares if offroading a lot. Shafts can break easily due to stresses and diff wind up.
X1 .................. well worth the trouble with the hubs already off.
