So can you see if you have a 4 pin by using a borescope through the fill port on the front and rear diffs?

I reckon that's possible No Doubt, brilliant idea rather than tearing down the diff assy. You may need someone to rotate the wheels while it's on the axle stands but having said that the 4 pin is a solid lump cage and very different to the normal diff cage.

So, I wonder if NAS P38's all have this 4-pin diff? in front and rear? If so, I'd like to upgrade my D2 diff's without spending all the big $$ for lockers.. my trac-control works fine for me, but I just replaced my worn out rear 2-pin, and I'm not happy with its light-duty design; which is why it failed..

Unhappy

Looking around and I'm only seeing short-nose diffs; no joy..

You'll need a 3.54 ratio long nose diff. P38's and Wolf Defenders use them. The forged 4 pin conversion is available from Ashcroft Transmissions but I reckon it won't be cheap and you'll need them to rebuild the diff which isn't a DIY job.

This vid explains a lot more about 2 pin on a Toyota diff.

I think you've got that backwards, the p38 and wolf diffs are short nose. Discos have standard long nose. Making them interchange isn't worth the hassle. Less time and money invested in an aftermarket unit for the long nose.

And I consider a diff rebuild to be very DIY. Meticulous maybe, but any garage mechanic can do it.

Lots of "P38" differentials on eBay seem to be 2 pin instead of the more robust military 4 pin config.

The p38 and "wolf" military diffs are different. Both are four pin but they arent interchangeable.

And I think the p38's only had the 4 pin if they had the 4.6? Or maybe they only had it in the rear diff? Either way, if it is a four pin, it's either wolf or a short nose p38 and neither are a direct swap for your stock long nose.
