Default DII Coolant Leak Driver's Side

Hey Folks,

Wife's DII has always leaked a small amount of coolant and I never could locate the leak so I would just top it off maybe once a month and life was happy...well, now it's at a point where this thing is leaking like a sieve.

I climbed underneath the rig and it looks like the coolant is pouring out of the oil pan...well, that's where it's pooling up at. It looks like it's coming from the driver's side of the block but I can't see where.

Before I start ripping this thing apart to locate the leak I thought I would bounce it off of you guys to see WHAT COOLANT LINES RUN ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE of the motor that would be likely culprits...I'm sure your insight will be helpful and save me a great deal of time.

Thanks!

There are no coolant lines on the drivers side except for the 2 small hose that go into the pre heater of the t/body. Check under the t/body and see if there is some leakage dripping on to the v/cover.

Mike,

Much appreciated. I was just going to give you a call but figured the forum would work just as well. The leak is certainly on the driver's side because it's hitting a little piece of the gasket of the oil pan, pooling up and running down to the middle of the oil pan...making it look like water from pan.

When I first noticed this I immediately pulled the oil dipstick out to check for milkshake. Further investigation only led me to see that it was dripping and hitting the gasket.

F#$%*!!!!!!!!!

This is looking really bad. I hit it with dye this morning, ran the engine, covered the engine compartment with a tarp and went to work with the UV light like a crime scene investigator.

It's tough to tell exactly what I'm looking at because the leak is on the frontal area of the motor and is obscured by the fan, belts and accessories. I can't tell whether it is the block or the driver's side head...what I can say is it looks like someone took a MIG welder and laid a small bead in that area.

It doesn't look like a gasket or a hose...it looks like it's pouring out of metal. It does appear that there is an accessory that bolts to the block or head in this region and maybe if I'm lucky the bolt hole runs through to the waterjacket and maybe it's just leaking from there??? (I'm NOT holding my breath).

At this point, being that the vehicle has leaked coolant from day one that we bought it used, it almost seems that someone did a shotty repair on a serious problem and it has reared its ugly head.

I'm downloading the RAVE CD again right now to hopefully identify the region of the motor where it's leaking a little better. I would post pictures but I'm not sure I could get a good picture of this region and it's tough to have perspective of what you're looking at.

Here's a picture for anyone interested in seeing. The one picture is a stock photo from Atlantic British to hopefully give you a perspective of what you're looking at in the other photo.

After speaking with Mike, I decided to begin tear down...I'll order the parts tomorrow...I'm having a hell of a time getting this thing apart...whoever said Discovery's were easy to work on has a much great affinity for fixing vehicles than I do.

It took me quite awhile to get the light finishers off and now I'm working on getting a screw out so that I can get the grill out of the way. Why the hell they set this thing up where you have to tear the entire front-clip apart to get the radiator out, I'll never understand. Hopefully I'll have this taken apart within 3-4 weeks and back together in 6-8 weeks.

Hey that is my problem too, see my post from yesterday or the day before. It is leaking from the front of the engine around the top of the water pump. I've posted this a few times. I'm thinking it is a water pump/gasket problem or front engine cover gasket leak.

Unstable you ever figure this out? What king of dye did you use? The stuff for R134a?
