OK here's the deal. I'm in the market for a disco. I want the disco primarily for mild recreational use. I will be adding the usual roof rack, arb bumper/winch, 2 inch lift and 32 inch tires. I'm a land rover tech by trade so I'm not worried about repairs as much. What I am worried about is performance of road. I will be doin mild of road nothing crazy. My question is how does the d1s center diff lock compare vs d2s traction control? Can a d1 compete with a d2 if they both have say an old man emu 2 inch lift? Im leaning towards a d1 because I can maybe get it under $1000 were as a d2 will prolly cost me 6-8k.

So to sum it all up, can a d1 compete with a d2? What are the limitations?

 

You've got it backwards. TC is down right awful compared to CDL. Now and 03-04 with TC and CDL, that might be something special. I'll let you know if I ever get mine swapped over.

Also the D1 has a shorter overhang in the back, making it better all things being stock.

So, buy a D2 with a transfer case that has the CDL nipple, then install the transfer case shifter from a D1 and have the best of both worlds.

 

I'd say the D1 is probably more reliable and a little more rugged. A Discovery at it's simplest. The D2's has got the gismo's and is a little more luxurious but you'll end up fixing more stuff on it. But being that you are LR tech by trade it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

 

Define mild off-roading for us. If your just doing camping trails and such, the TC by itself will be fine. But if you're planning to ride some trails, you can't beat TC+CDL.

Try to look at 1999-Mid 01 DII's only. You can easily add the CDL lever to them, and you're get.

 

The D2s definitely have better on road manners. D1s are more basic with fewer options. Accessories for either truck cost about the same. Both have 3.54 gearing, so keep that in mind when you start throwing the rubber on. Good Luck
