Default disco 2 ticking

Hi:

I went thru a couple of threads on here discussing various ways of resolving the notorious ticking on these 4.6L engines in the disco 2. Here is what I've done so far:

- did an engine flush (had shell rotella T4 15W40 in) with a Mann filter - used AmSoil engine flush. came out pitch black.
- flushed the radiator, put new coolant in and a new 190 deg thermostat.
- setup ultra-guage to monitor things

I'll attach a link to my running of the truck right after this was done. FYI...truck has just over 70,000 miles. Bought it in Nov. 2022.

Does it tick from a stone cold start, or only after warming up? If it does it after warming up, check the exact temp it starts with obd2 temp gauge. Could be a ultragauge or torque app. If it starts below ticking at a temp over 180 or 170, you can put a lower temp thermostat in it. You should also check the oil pressure, the other possibility is that you have a cracked oil pump or walked cam bearing and the ticking is due to low oil pressure and not a slipped liner.

Mine has always been exhaust, the right fix is to pull and true the manifold and Y pipe faces. But that is a ton of work, so every couple of years I pull it part at the Y pipe and replace the hi temp RTV.

Have a 180 degree one coming shortly which I'll install. I plan to bring it to my local shop to have them test the oil pressure at cold idle and warm at 2000 RPM.

When the engine is cold, no tick present. When it hits right around 180 degrees, the ticking starts. The video showed ultraguage at 183 when I said "now the
ticking starts".

Will post the results when I get these items done.

@mackendw When you check the oil pressure have them check cold idle cold 2500 then warm idle and warm 2500

My 04 is 50 PSI at cold start idle dropping to 18ish at 183 /idle and about 47 at 183 2500 rpm

I'm looking for:Pressure at idle - minimum 0.7 bar (10 lbf.in2)

Pressure at 2000 rev/min (hot) 3.4 bar (50 lbf.in2)

(from the RAVE)...ie: anything above minimum for both ...

If it starts at 183 then you may get lucky and be able to get rid of it by running a bit cooler. If OP is ok you can run a 170 or 160 but will need a 99-02 ECU to keep it from throwing a code with a 170, 160 nothing will stop the code. If ok is low and the cause then hope it is a cracked gear set ( I had one ) as that is an easy fix. Walked cam bearing is more involved.

I picked up the Autel 619 diagnostic dohicky today to reset my 3 amigos (brakes totally rotted out which threw them). New lines, rotors, pads, calipers and brake fluid.
Nice, easy to use unit. There were/are no other diagnostic codes thrown.

I got around to installing a GlowShift oil pressure guage on the disco over the weekend. long overdue.

Truck fired up cold with oil pressure of 52 PSI. will update later today when it warms up some (3 degrees here this morning).

25 degrees here in sunny florida this fine day.

oil pressure at startup - 52 PSI (idle)
2000 rpm, ~54

truck up to temp:

22 PSI at idle
48 PSI at 2000 RPM
