Default disco 2000 electrics poroblems

i am at my wits end.

i have a 2000 discovery td5 gs. i woke up this morning after a nights rain and i have dificulties opening the doors with the remote key. eventually i got in and i put the key in the ignition and turned the key and the srs light flickered and a ticking sound came from what i think was the fuse box. the side lights work, but when i put it to dipped it just dies, the battery is but a month old and has been checked. i tried closing the doors with the remote and it wouldnt do it. i got in the car and tried again, it locked (yes locked me in) and the alarm sounded. it took me 25 minutes to get out and the only way i could do it was to put the key in the ignition and turn to position 1, turn on the side lights, switch them off then take the key out and the remote key worked, by no way was this combination a fix to any problem it was probably a coinsidence.

if someone would like to spend a few emails or posts talking to me it would be greatfully appreciated.

i dont want to go to a german dealer and they charge me a bomb and them only change a fuse or relay.

regards and thanks in advance to anyone that can spare some time

I assume that the battery is flat from your discription.

It could be that you have one of two problems,
1. the battery is not been recharged, this can be due to either a faulty alternator or bad cable connections. Worth checking the voltage if you have a volt meter, and see if you have any charge on the battery, and then with the vehicle running, check what reading you get of the alternator.
2. You have a voltage leak of some kind, this would be harder to find.

i have now found that the ticking sound is coming from the starter relay in the fuse box in the engine compartment. i have changed it and still it ticks, if i remove it and turn the ignition on everything displays properly but will not start as the relay is not in.

the battery is brand new with a full charge ADAC mechanic that come to check the battery confirmed this.

Hi !

I may be wrong, but could it be 2 faulty starting relays ?

I think Takeo was meaning that when you swapped the relay with the new one, the new one was not working either.

I had a similar problem when I ordered a new starter motor for my 90, when i fitted the new starter motor, it failed due to a manufacturering fault and was allowing it to short out inside the starter motor when you turned the key. If you held it for any length of time it caused the battery to start heating up. Worth checking the starter motor.
