Disco 3: Fuel Gauge blocked

Hello,
On my 2009 Discovery 3, second hand, 80 000km (50 000miles), every now and then my fuel gauge suddenly shows "tank empty" even after a full filling.
Not very practical when driving often.
I had the same problem on a range rover in the late seventies, but then it was a machanical gauge touchin the side of the tank: some bending dit the trick.
Solution 1: keep count of the mileage... and keep a jerrycan full.
But there might be a better trick? and where can I get a spares catalog and workshop manual?
Thanks for any solution

I do not have knowledge specific to a D3, but the fuel sender will still likely use a mechanical sender with a physical float in the fuel. Like your previous rover, it is probably being impaired from a full range of motion. It could be a sporadic fault in the sensor itself. I would recommend an independent rover mechanic, as it could be a simple bending of a float arm. A dealership repair will likely be a new fuel pump assembly with sender(assumption for a D3) which will be many £££.
