I am replacing my leaky steering box and need to know the size of the nut on to the drop arm. The biggest socket I have is a 38mm, and that is too small. I am guessing it is either a 40mm or 42mm. Can someone confirm for me so I can buy the right socket?

 

Bump -- can someone who has a 40mm/42mm socket check the fit on the drop arm nut for me?

 

Damn, I'm pretty sure it's a 40mm, but a 42 would work as well. I bought one specially for it...let me check my amazon history

 

As a follow-up, I found that a 1-5/8" socket will work. It is slightly loose-fitting, but I was able to take off the nut with it.

 

I bought a set of axle nut impact sockets at harbor freight. One of them fit the drop arm nut. And now I've got a set of extra big sockets for other jobs that might come up, like helping friends replace CV joints on their Hondas.
