Default Disco II?

Hello all! I'm new to the forum and to Land Rover. I have a question regarding Discovery II. I love the style and am interested in buying one. Just had a baby and my Mazda Miata just won't cut it any more. The LR seems to be what I need now. My question revolves around its reliability for everyday driving (approx 15,000 miles per year). Unfortunately I live on Long Island, so she'll only be on the pavement. Is this truly a practical car for this. I have few mechanical skills ( oil change, tune up and the like). I spoke to my mechanic, he is a foreign car specialist as I deal with him with my Audi A4 ( a vehicle which I already have too many issues with, and which I find expensive to maintain). He says to stay away from LR as it will get expensive. Should I heed his warning? Many of you out there seem very happy with your choice for the Discovery. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely requires expensive maintenance as much or more than the Audi. I still love both of mine. Best 4x4 I also love my Audi.

Take care of your rover and it will take care of you they are very reliable trucks in my opinion,I bought my truck from a one owner that was very well taken care of I also read alot of bad things about them with the the rover it is like a hit or miss thing, just make sure you have it inspected by a rover tech and good luck searching for your rover once you find one you will love it.

I would recommend one to any one and every one. The most important thing to remember is preventative maintenance. Don't wait till it blows up to fix it.

You live in Long Island and it will never leave the pavement. I can't see any possible reason that the Disco II would be a great vehicle for you.

as long as you get one that has been maintained and not been ragged out then you will be ok. just know that you have to use premium gas.

I enjoy spending money on parts and fixing up my discovery. It is all apart of the "Land Rover" experience. But yeah, as long as you take preventive maintenance then all should be well. My disco usually only needs something fixed after breaking things or ruining things off pavement.. Nothing too serious (yet) just small stuff.

Get a new mechanic [sm=smiley2.gif]!

No serious... I just bought a 2000 Discovery and love it! This is my first and I can't tell you about reliability yet. These cars were built to drive around the world and they do that regularly, so I agree with preventative maintenance! If you can't do it yourself now, you have 2 options: Learn or pay... I found that amongst the Land Rover owners you will always find people willing to give you tips on how to solve potential problems or answer your questions. And no, not everything can be solved through forums and sometimes you will need to pull out that wallet. If you can save money by buying little things on eBay and doing the installation or repairsyourself, you will save enough money to have the complicated stuff done by professionals and keep your Rover running for a long long time. Oh, and last but not least, consider moving where you can really enjoy that car! [sm=joke.gif]

Imm on my second disco and I will agree that they are hit or miss in terrms of reliability. Preventative maintenance is always preferrable to replacing things as they go bad. If your looking for a city SUV you might want to consider a Ford Escape Hybrid or Saturn Vue Hybrid.
