Default disco II - 2002 vs 2003

I am looking to purchase a disco in the next couple weeks. I have been doing a lot of searching and some research. I am trying to decide whether to buy a 2001/2002 and stick with the 4.0, or go with a 2003 and the 4.6 (outside the oil pump vin range).
My hang is the following: I would like to get to the 2003 year model for the added power, but I am very nervous about the oil pump situation, even outside the VIN range. I have been reading about people losing their engines, even outside the VIN range on the TSB.

Any info would be appreciated, especially from people that have owned both, or that have extensive experience with the disco II.

Thanks.

I own a 2002, no CDL not even the nipple to attach a shifter. Also the 18" wheel are expensive to put rubber on and few choices. Not sure what LR was thinking with that. IMHO I would rather have a late model DI or a 2004 DII. How many miles on the 2003?

I wouldnt trade my rover for anything besides maybe a Defender or Diesel Disco.

BUT if i had to do it all over again. I would have a 99DI or 2004DII.

What are you going to use the vehicle for? That should be more of a determining factor than what engine is under the hood. I personally would stay away from the 03 especially in Denver where they are selling for almost as much as an 04. Colorado has the greatest number of Rovers per capita of anywhere in the world except England. Be patient and you can find a good deal on an 04 so you have CDL and the bigger engine.

I will be using the disco as my DD around town, but I spend a lot of time in the mountains, camping, hunting, skiing, etc...

So far the 2003's that I have seen area selling for around $10k +/- depending on miles. The 2004's seem to take a pretty big jump to around $15k +/- depending on miles. I am looking to stay at $10k or under. The 2002 and older disco II's are all over the board for pricing depending on miles, plenty of good deals on these around the denver area.

Yikes I paid just under $10k for my 2002 4 years ago in New York City. Like Josh said above seriously consider a 99 DI.

You can buy out of area, too, and win big. I bought an '02 for $5k in Portland, OR, that had the heads done and all four discs replaced in the four months before I bought it...

I second the sentiments here. The '04 is a huge upgrade in several areas, but there's a certain charm to the D1s...

Up in the mountains the CDL in the 04 makes it worth the price difference. About 99% of Discoveries around Denver are overpriced. I looked at a 04 that the dealer wanted $15000 for. I talked to the salesman and laughed in his face when he told me that was what the truck was worth and they couldn't come down.
