Yeah the dealership charges an arm and a leg so I want to try my best to avoid them. A locksmith I talked to told me that he can remove the security feature so that I can use the key or a screw driver to turn the ignition he said it would be around $175. I know it's a risk for theft but I'll do anything to get this truck to start so that we can move on to changing the tires with the super sized lug nuts.

I'll look into ordering blank valet key blades to get it cut at Ace unless the locksmith can cut it.

ACE can cut it as is with ILCO blanks.
Just go in there and get it done.

Call the store. Ask if Ilco RV4-P is in stock.

Thanks for the tip. I went down to Ace after calling them to confirm they have it in stock. When I got there they later told me they didn't have it in stock and that only the dealership can make copies. I know the guy was full of it but another guy slipped me a number to a locksmith near by. I went it, got the key made for $4.

I came back home to test it out. So far the doors unlock/open but the ignition still doesn't turn. The alarm light above the steering wheel keeps flashing rapidly. Not sure if that's important or not. I'm determined to to get this ignition to start.

With your new key - hold the key straight in.
Don't let the key decide - you hold it straight in.

try pulling it out slightly - pushing it in slightly.
changing the angle slightly.

You will get it.
Keep trying all combinations with the key.

I put the key in slowly and tried the jiggle motion again.... The Rover gods heard my frustration because it finally turned! I guess it's a certain trick to getting that perfect angle. The new key was slightly bent after taking it out so the ignition might need work soon but for now I'm estatic!

Thank you all for the fast replies and helpful information. I came to the right plce

Now contact Paul Grant and see if you can get you a good ignition & door lock out of one of the DII's that he is parting out, before it happens again leaving you or your family stranded in the middle of the night. Did i read that you just bought this at an auction?

Use the same key you have used for your first copy.
Make about 5 keys - if you have bent your first one.

Congratulations.

Key should not ever bend.
Too much twisting force.
Just a little twist and jiggle.

Once you figure out the sweet spot you'll be OK for a time.
