So I do not YET own a Disco Series II.

In theory could the front prop shaft be modified with a greasable nipple so to correct the common issue with these faulty shafts? Possibly by drilling a small but precise hole, then welding in (or glue) a nipple which will allow the shaft to be greased? And are the u-joints on these front prop shafts also non-greaseable? Or do the joints come complete with nipples as is the case with the Disco 1? Just something to think about. If you believe this mod cannot be done then please specify in detail why?

 

The DII comes with 1 grease-able u-joint from the factory. The rest are sealed. I've never heard of anyone drilling and installing grease nipples to the u-joints. Most people just research and seek out the replacement grease-able u-joints and/or the center bearing kit. You can buy the parts and take it to a drive line shop and they'll rebuild it and balance it for you. Cost me about $200 total, including parts and labor.

 

Cost me $80.00 in parts and 1.5 hours of my own labor to change out all 3 front U Joints and Center Bearing.

Dont forget to grease the Spine section as long as you have it apart.

 

For the modifying portion of my question I was referring to the actual shaft itself. Not the u-joints. Drilling a hole in the shaft to replicate the design of the disco 1 prop shaft.

 

The slip portion of the shaft is already greaseable. The u-joints are not. The u-joints are what fails.

 

There is a tiny plug you remove with a hex key and screw in a nipple to inject the lube. Don't leave the nipple there, put the plug back in so as not to imbalance the shaft.

 

exactly. i would replace them no matter what because you don't know what the last person did, if they greased them reguarly or not. it's a piece of mind thing.

 

Note: Even after replacing the stock UJ's with greasable u-joints and a new centering ball your rebuilt stock drive shaft will have no easy way to grease the new centering ball.

I point this out because while at the Wilds a couple weeks ago, I saw a guy bash in his tranny when the centering ball sheared off. (He said it had been replaced just 40k miles earlier as part of a front drive shaft rebuild...)

 

yes you still have to drop it down to grease the centering ball

 

Tom Woods has D2 prop shafts for $270 with greasable joints...just got one. By the looks of it, will still be next to impossible to grease ball while on the truck.
