Great feedback, guys - keep it coming. I just about had a heart attack this afternoon when I checked on insurance. I'm a good driver and my '04 Suburban was about an additional $350 per six months of insurance - they quoted me over $700 for the Disco with the same coverage. Its a symbol 23 most likely due to its very high collision repair costs. That certainly throws another variable into the equation.

Hear me now.. believe me later.....

Iwould NEVER do it a gain. It is like paying 40k for a Yugo. OK, maybe not that bad

I paid 40k for my Discovery 2003, and just sold itfor 14k.

Sad and happy at same time. I did really love the idea of the car, but too much trouble, and Land Rover has lost a customer forever due to their lack of support of their product.

End of an story for me...

Did service become better, worse, or no change after BMW and then Ford bought them?

I'm new to Disco ownership and have been happy for the past 6 months. I bought mine because my wife needed something more substantial to drive than my 97 Wrangler with 33's and lockers to take the kids to school and get groceries and take out in the mountains on weekends. I haven't had it in the mountains yet, but I hope to soon. I bought mine right, I still have the window sticker for over $39,000 in 2000! I got it for under 10. I bought my 2000 Disco for only $1000 more than I sold my '97 Jeep for and it needed new tires and top. I just got it detailed (number one son got carsick[:'(]) and it sure is pretty. Reminds me why I've always been attracted to them, just a good looking rig. Not to mention the amenities. I hope to see how she 4 wheels this spring with our local club www.montanabackroads.com I'll have the only LR which also makes me happy. Oh yeah, the wife and kids like it too.

The downside, just what the other guys here have touched on, 3 days after getting it home the alternator went out. No LR dealers here so the local import shop charged $900 to fix it. $300 for alternator and $600 for labor. Luckily the dealershipin Idahowe bought it from covered the cost (might be why the labor was so high) I'm not looking forward to see what happens next, hopefully nothing for a good long time!

Hey "Different Drummer"! how good is the radio reception in your rover man?
Radio reception is excellent... My only problem is I like to Rock and I live in an area with mostly country stations. Why do you ask?

OK, I think I just figured out why you asked about radio reception. Those are not antennas on the front. That's a fishing rod holder I made for the front so I can go surf fishing on the NC Outer Banks without having to break apart my gear every time I change locations. Those are fishing rods sticking up. Notice the bait cooler and cutting board in front. By the way, that's the main reason I love my Disco - I can pack all my gear, pull a cargo trailer with even more fishing gear, drive around in that soft sand all day long while some others are having to dig out, and do all that in comfort and style. Once again, sure I'd buy it again.

Short answer yes I would buy another. I bought mine new in 97 after the first offroad trip I bought a 77 jeep and in six years of hardcore offroading dropped 50,00.00 into the jeep and sold it for 3500.00. I have since lifted chopped welded bashed, banged and pryed on my Disco. At 85,000 miles a few weeks ago I pulled the heads dropped the oil pan to replace the gaskets at my wifes bequest to curb the leaks onto the pavers. Only to find that it still leaks coolant timing chain cover has a leak next to the block which I missed with all the other leaks. I am giong to replace the gasket today. My Disco hasn't been as trouble free as my Caddie but then again, well you know. I love my Disco

My 99 is actually getting better with age! As I have fixed all the ****ling little things, it seems to be getting more reliable. I have put 100K miles (communting and summer camping) on it and still love it. I expect to get alot of years use out of mine still, so by the time I would be looking to replace it, there may not be any left ;-)

I like my 98, but I know I can fix just about anything that might go wrong on it. So I'm no worried about nickle and diming. Anything should be able to tow a boat 100 mi. I bought ours sight-unseen in SF and drove it 3,600 mi to WI. We stopped to rock crawl on some trails in the middle of nowhere in Moab and did some mountain passes in in tim-buck-too CO. It had the worst tires on any vehicle I've ever bought (heck didn't even have a jack!). All that and a few other boogers I had to fix when I got home ..and not a major hick-up on the trip. Why not give one a try. You should be able to find one pretty cheap.

On the other hand, I would think a Tahoe would be a perfect fit. Morepower, anyone can work onand would get better gas mileage on regular gas. A Suburbanis probably the best tow vehicle you can find simply because of the weight and long wheel base. But for 100 mi a few times out of the year, what does it matter? I didn't find L/R hard to get parts for, especially with the L/R dealer in town. Plenty of stuff can be sourced after market. I think the Tahoes are more ergonomical inside. I really like the seats and ride of our L/R.

L/R's are fun to own from a pride standpoint. A great conversation starter. Good luck

In short...yes I would...I don't need it as a DD but I love to drive it and work on it. I've owned a Jeep Wrangler and a Jeep GC and this is by far my favorite.
