thank you ill check. I have not climbed underneath. We have had a lot of rain, and i I wanted to gain a little wisdom here before I went crazy buying parts or tearing anything apart I'll check that when I get home. I'm also wondering if it bound up and rotated the xyz. But the neutral cicuit and other gears seem to still be in alignment.. But I can't verify that

What does the dash show when the lever is moved? If it correctly shows P, N, D, etc, etc, then the XYZ is doing it's job.

Now that I have more information I'll suggest this. Perhaps you've done this; I don't know. Try adjusting the XYZ switch.
  • Chock the wheels and set the parking brake.
  • Have a helper sit in the driver's seat to monitor the instrument panel and move the shifter through its range.
  • Crawl under the truck (it's easier if you come at it from the passenger (LHD) side.
  • Loosen slightly the two bolts with the 10mm heads that permit rotary adjustment of the XYZ switch on the shifter selector shaft.
  • Have the helper turn the ignition switch to Position II. This makes the instrument and shifter bezel indicators operable.
  • Carefully rotate the XYZ switch first one way, and if necessary the other way, while your helper watches to see if the Park position indicator on the instrument panel and shifter bezel illuminate.
  • If the Park indicators do illuminate, tighten the 10mm bolts and have your helper move the shifter through its range to confirm whether or not the other RND321 positions illuminate correctly. If they do, try to start the truck in Park, and if successful declare victory.
  • If you can't get P to display correctly, remove and clean/rebuild the XYZ switch per mollusc's advice.
Hope this helps, Good luck.

I'll get a second pair of hands and try that tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

Default Problem resolved.. Kind of..

So the last advice to try adjusting the xzy, was correct.

As recommended I loosened the bolts slightly and rotated till helper saw a "p" pop up. Tightened it all down and GTG.

Now here's the rub. I've owned enough D2s to know things are never that easy. When I couldn't hardly push the shifter forward something went wrong. The bolts were very tight and I wasn't able to rotate the xyz picture to breaking those bolts lose. There was almost no adjustment left when I adjusted it to current working status.

So what happened? Did something break internally? Is it time to pick up a spare? I find it odd that or it was so "bound up" for a split second and now it's smooth as butter again.

Thoughts?

The XYZ switch has little internal fingers that trail over contact strips. Maybe something in there got bent, although I wouldn't expect that to cause that much resistance.
Maybe another possibility is that the linkage between your shift lever and the transmission itself got messed up, and the XYZ position is just a secondary symptom of other things being out of line?

That would be my guess. Actually, it was my guess...

There are actually two different internal designs for a DII XYZ switch. The design mollusc describes is the later version, usually with a black plastic cover. The earlier design, which in my experience has a light-colored cover, has small switches inside that can be removed and cleaned. There's an extensive, well-illustrated writeup over on discoweb.com from many years ago showing how to do it.

Thanks for all the input.

so took it for a drive this morning and the transmission is shifting funny. Noticed that "d" is not aligned now.

I inspected linkage and everything appears to be secure.
Are there any adjustment points, or weak points to check?

What about on the console side anything to check there? I considered a scenario like a Penny slipped between somethingand is holding the shifter backwards. But I'm not seeing anything like that
