Default Disco trans prob

hi guys new to the forum, one of my rovers just starting doing somthing very odd.seems when the truck gets warm the truck will shift fine but when u shut the truck off and then turn it back on when u shift into reverse it takes about 6 seconds before it engages.i work on rovers for a living but amnot a trans tech by anymeans i have my own shop in nj. it also does this in drive under the same scenario.the truck is a 2001 disco2 with 180000 miles on it runs great i would just like to avoid buying a new trans for it.thanx guys

Classic signs of a clogged trans filter.

What if the trans fluid had not been changed (maybe ever?) in 180k?

How did it look inside?

With new fluid & filter, I could see the crap circulating & wreaking havoc with the valving.

If it's shifting ok, I'd drive it as much as poss.

I'd also change the fluid again. (drain the pan)

It might start behaving & you're not out much by trying.

luck,greg

thanx greg i have changed the fluid every 50k and it does shift quite well for a trans with that kind of milage it seems like the fluid is too hot in my opinion only does it when it is warm out soooooo wierd.

First, the fluid should be changed, by the books, every 30,000 miles.
You should have a tranny fault code, something in the 700 to 801 range, get a scanner on it and see what shows up.

Then you may need to find a friend in the tranny business that can either plug into it or hook in and verify pressures.

ok thanx mike i thought mabye i could mabye do a quick fix thought it might be somthing dumb that i missed or overlooked but i guess not i am going to try some lucas trans treatment and if that does not work my buddies dad owns a junkyard and said he had one with 60k for $500 guess ill just play it by ear and see what happens it does not do it consistent enough for me to slap a trans in it right away like i said only does it in warm weather when the truck warms up

Is the trans temp sensor any good?
Maybe its overheating and the light is not being set off?
