Default Disco Vs Tree

Had a collision with a small fallen tree last night.

1” branch through the middle of the radiator. Exploded the plastic bumper. Broke the plastic headlight part that holds the top.

Calling insurance this morning. Most excited about the new metal bumper I might get, plus new lights to replace my terrible set.

Looks like I need:

Radiator - is Nissens the way to go?
Bumper - not sure how my insurance will view this.
Headlight - $1500 a pair from rovers north.

Anyone experienced with putting a small things like this through insurance?

Bummer! Don't forget about the AC condenser and fan. If your radiator was pierced, it had to go through both of them and potentially a trans cooler, that hit looks pretty low. Unfortunately the ins co may want to total it if the parts list is too long and expensive. Be prepared to get comps off Bring A Trailer to justify the expense. Worst case is they total it and give you a payout, then you buy it back and fix it yourself. It's a convoluted approach but if you have the right insurance this is actually a pretty good way to go about it. The downside being a branded title, but if you're not looking to resell it doesn't really matter. Apart from the pride.

Edit: I don't see any coolant on the ground, which is usually plentiful in a case like this. Are you sure it punctured the radiator? Maybe just the bits in front of it?

It is their turn to pay.

My last and only collision with a tree was much worse. Do not know what happened as I was passed out while driving (medical trouble), but suspect the tree did cross the road. The front end differential and wheels were under the cabin.

The branch made its way through to the inside, stopped just short of the fan. Hadn’t thought of other things it’s gone through. The branch actually plugged the hole, so there is coolant still in the bottle, even this morning.

deductible is 1k. Waiting for a call with the adjuster to see how they view it.

So it went in just above the trans cooler.

The fan body stopped the branch. So I could add a new one of those on top.

If I add up Ac condenser, fan, lights, bumper, rad, I can see how they might get to a total loss figure.

I would also add a water pump to the list. Without knowing how much impact the fan clutch took, it would be risky to run that water pump.

@cappedup I have a pair of headlights left over from my D2, I can far better than 1500 for the pair.

Hey Richard. Appreciate that.

I’ve been looking to swap these for a while, they are beyond fogged.

The bigger issue is the tree cracked the mounting plastic plate on top. Do you have those as well?

They will likely total it due to the labor cost. I got $12k from Progressive for my 2k 247k D2 in extremely good condition. Roof was bent on mine so not really repairable. Buy it back or buy a better one.

Learn about the salvage title process in NY, and be prepared for that ding on the record if you ever want to sell it later.
