The LC is probably a better engineered and more reliable vehicle. As said before though they are both about equal in ability but the Disco is a bit smaller so that can be advantageous. I think what it comes down to is if you actually want a Land Rover or not. IMO owning one isn't just about having a vehicle that can go off road. You can do that with a Wrangler. Land Rover has history and is basically a status symbol, but at the same time you have to be willing to commit to maintenance. It's up to you.

As far as looks go the Discovery>LC

Wow, a lot of good reples. If I could find a LR (with decent service history) in the $4,000 range I would buy it. But, I'm in Idaho and most 2001's I find are still $6k-$8k, which is the same I'm finding for a 97 Land Cruiser. I'm coming from a 92 Nissan Pathfinder (which is still great, but I'm bored with it and need a new project). I'll test drive a couple of each and decide. Maybe, my best move would be to keep the Pathfinder and add a couple of ARB lockers to it.

I felt compelled after this to go and take my FJ80 out for a run. Had to jump start it been so long. It was a short run and have decided to sell it.

Just be patient and remember that the $6-8k is just what you're asking in that area...don't hesitate to travel to find a good Disco if that's the truck you decide on. There aren't too many D2's in my area, so I made the 6 hours to NY/NJ to hunt some down. It was a great little adventure and now I've got a great D2.

One idea that I came up with (sadly, I thought of this after I bought my truck), was to try reaching out to some of the parts guys (i.e.- Will Tillery, PT Schram, etc...) and see if they have anything or know anyone with a truck that's too nice to part out. If they have a truck for you, it probably won't be in your area, but might be a worth a shot...

You really need to figure out what you are looking for in a truck. I had thought about and looked for a LC in the same age as you but in the end I went LR. yes it can be more expensive but even my LC friend likes my truck better. likes the ride likes the height the perfomance with the larger engine. etc.... but he needs to carry more than I do. In the end you will have an awesome vehicle that can take to to many incredible places and that is all that matters..

I'm in central Idaho, just about as far from SC as you can get, but I'm planning on selling it to my nephew. It's really a good rig because I've already done all the maintenance on it (brakes, timing belt &wp, exhaust manifold studs, etc). It's an SE with all the good options on it (Sports/Power package, 5 speed manual, rear LSD and rear disc brakes).
