Mine was the flex ring just in front of the diff.
You can replace the rubber u-joint (flex ring) or get a
replace the driveshaft that has a real u-joint for about
400$ that is what I did.

i took a good look at those today, both seem to be fine (no cracks or splits and no sloppiness)i know that it has been just fitted with new tires before i bought it. could the wheel/tire balance be out that much to cause this. i know it has 18"tires that i guess would accentuate any imbalance. any other people experience wheel balance vibrations. itjust seems the whole vehicle is shaking...kind of unnerving when the wife drives it...thanks

I too am having a similar problem where mine wobbles at 50 and when I hit bumps in the road. I have to get this fixed as there are more pertinant things to fix on my 96 Disco. However if you back track in this forum to 9/2/2006 at around 1:56 EST there was a two page post with multiple ideas of what could be wrong and how to fix it, including balancing the tires. The thread is named STEERING WOBBLE. Hopefully you can get some information from it since all of the veterans were the ones with the advice.

Nikki,
Sounds like you have either some bad bushings, a bad tie rod end, a bad steering stabilizer or you need to get your preload set on your swivels.

I would start with having your tires rebalanced, you will probably find the problem there.
As for your front drive shaft, are you under warranty, if so don't worry about it for now.If you are not covered by a warranty have someone rebuild your front constant velocity joint other wise it will fail and you could be looking ar a new tranny also, VERY $$$$$.

I had the tires balanced yesterday and its amazing the difference...no more vibration....the tire guy said it looks as though the last person who balanced them was out about 180 degrees with the weights...now the only thing i have is a kind of oscillating wirring noise from below...its not really bad but it seems to get faster the faster i go...maybe a u joint? or is that just a normal sound....also when i pull away from a standstill the trans kind of whines but i dont get any banging into gears and no trans slop...normal again? it only happens fron 1st to 2nd...thanks

I had the exact same problem on my disco... Turns out I lost a couple wheel weights on the trail and a quick balancing fixed it right up.Situations like thatreally add credence to the in-tire balancing products.

Maybe you should purchase a high quality U-joint. That was what I did when I was in that situation same as yours.
