I have high respect for Jeeps, and as far as LR's
beinga higher class ride the people that buy LR's just

I think you may want clear that up by saying, the people who buy an LR, throw rims and other crap like that on it are the ones who have the self esteem issues.


I was setting at the LR dealer one day having the frt end
aliment done and there were some people looking at LR's.
They had gold chains and baggy pants and drove up in
a newer BMW.

After they left a person that had their LR in for service
made a comment I don't know what those people where
looking at Land Rovers for they just don't fit.

I looked at them people leavingand looked at the person that said it and said nice M3 isn't it.
They did not say anything to me after that and with in
ten mins their FreeLander was ready to go.

That person had a Land Rover for the Name only
nothing more nothing less.

Jeeps (most)are good for what they are made for off road
and Jeep has not gone to far from its rootshere in the U.S.

If we had the Defenders here I could say that about LR
also.
Don't get me wrong I like my Disco I andcould notor don't care tonot find aJeep that fit my needs.

Off road people are people no matter what they drive,
its all about sharing the off road experience.

I sure am headed towards a L.R. now but need to ask another question. Where does the Range Rover fit into the lineup. Is it more of the suburban , mostly paved road creature or does it equal the Disco in offroad capability? Thanks, Ken

The Range Rover is a capable off road machine-at leastin earlier versions. Given their cost, the greater question is whether or not you want to risk scratching it.

The one I am looking at is a mid 90s for $4000.00 with 175,000 miles and seems to have been well maintained. At least it is running smoothly now!

The Disco is full time 4wd, no need to shift. It is permanent 4 wheel drive or 4 low. There is no 2wd for the land rover. but I think it helps because you don't have to shift you just go.

My Cherokee can go places only a very modified Discovery could attempt.
Question: Your Cherokee is modified. Is your Discovery unmodified? Unless the Discovery had a similar lift, tires and mods, it would seem anindirect comparison. Just trying to clarify.

If you compare like for like, ie stock vehicles, the Disco would do anything your cherokee does and more...

There also seems to be lots of posts referring to turning circle,some D2's with16" wheels were fitted with longer stopswhich were for 18" rims,so it "may" be possible to improve your TC by fitting the smaller stops if yours is fitted with long ones,

Very interesting. I was wondering why folks were complaining about the turning radius on the Discovery. Mine is excellent- even compared to my Rodeo and almost as good as my wife's Mini. I have the S which nearly always shipped from the factory with 16" rims and I now see that I have shorter stops too.

...so THAT's why I can't do U Turns without running up on sidewalks. Am I to understand that I can simply change out (or maybe cut) the stops and have a better radius, or because of the 18" rims I can't? Sorry in advanceif that's a stupid question.

Hi, Cars with 18" rims have the bigger stops to avoid the rims / tyres rubbing anything on full lock, However, I do know of guys that have fitted smaller stops to vehicles with 18"rims and they dont get any fouling at all anyway, but it improves the TC by a LOT.

The overall running diameter of 16" + tyre is identical to and 18"rim + tyre, so why Land Rover did this.......well who knows. You could replace them and see how it goes.
EDIT :-

The main reason for this was because the 18" rims are wider so "may" rub the radius arm, but as I said, Land rover made it easy for themselves and fitted longer stops to all of them in that chassis range.......although a much larger % of vehicles had 16"rims from the factory

Ok heresthe realinfo. LHD vehicles Chassis numbers 1A725326 - 4A828723 were fitted with 29mm lockstops REGARDLESS of the fact if they had 16" or 18" wheels. Vehicles with 16" rims can be retro-fitted with 23mm lock stops to improve the turning circle.

Reducing the lockstop by 1mm = reduces TC by 9.8" and so on. Part No of 23mm Lock stops is FTC 5151. If they proove to short, Washers can be added Part no WDL112081L to increase the size by 1mm intervals....

AsI said I know ofguys with 18" rims do this anyway, and still have no probs, If you have 16" rims and you feel your TC is rubbish and you vehicle falls into this chassis range simply replace them and enjoy some tighter turning
