Discovery - which year is best?
Hi there,
Thanks for all of the useful info.
I have always loved the Discovery -- if I were to buy a recent one, what years should I avoid or what year seems to have the least trouble?
Any opinions on buying through Carmax?
Thanks!

As with any vehicle, avoid the first few years of production. The last few years are the best. They have fixed most problems. Of course these are not the most stylish, just dependable.
Carmax is OK. With a Rover, go to a Dealer and buy a Certified vehicle and go for the extra warranty. It will pay for itself many times over.

Very helpful answer -- thanks. Now that I've begun my search, I almost feel like following every Discovery I see. They are such great vehicles!
I'll try a Rover dealer, and from what I've read in the forums, I'll want to request a complete service history of each vehicle.
Thanks again,
Ingrid

Backlash? As in 'Why would you buy a gas guzzling earth-killer, you insensitive pile of feces!?'
A little, but not much. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I sometimes get looks from folks, but I use it for off-road purposes, so if people get too uppity, I let them I bought it for a reason, and not just to look cool. Some folks won't be happy unless you're driving a bio-diesel/electric hybrid that plants trees as you move along, but there's not much that can be done about that . . .

i think they call the LR3 the Discovery 3 in europe. dont know why they bother calling it that in the first place. anywho in reality it is the continuation of the discovery.
I've had hardly any issues with my 2000 Disco, produced during the "BMW reign". If I totalled it today, I'd be looking for another one of that era and would stay away from the later redesigned version as a friend of mine has one of those and has had nothing but problems with it from the start.
