Ditching the running boards

RE: Ditching the running boards
My wife is 5'0"! And I'm a bit concerned because she grabs the steering wheel to pull herself in because we have no running boards. Discos are tough but thatcan't be too good for the steering assembly.
Priced a couple of UNINSTALLED sets at the local LR dealer's parts department here in Ohio. For my 2003 Disco SE: chrome set for 350, black set for 700. (US)
Thoughts? Comments? Black would look much better on my LR but why the price difference? And just how easy are they to install yourself? I'd hate to put running boards on only to have the frame come apart on the freeway.

RE: Ditching the running boards
Try looking on Craigslist for running boards if you want a cheaper set. My g/f is 5'3/4" and I have her use the grab handle along the headliner. The PO used the top of the A-pillar trim as a grab and it's now cracked in a few places. Get a copy of the RAVE cd, they have all the acc. fitting insructions in it so you can judge if you want to do the job yourself. Someone else put my set on, but I took my set off in about 20 minutes.

RE: Ditching the running boards
Anyone tried the ARB running boards (side steps)? I know running boards can be a liability when offroading, but the ARBs look pretty tough (they're advertised as offering protection, not just a step):

With the 2" OME lift, my kids don't have an easy time getting into the Disco (and neither do older passengers, for that matter)--so I've been considering adding the ARB side steps...
