You know... cooling issues, head gasket issues, slipped liner issues, over-heating issues....

They are pretty much the same engine but with more problems.

Okay, so can a DII be "dumbed down" to a DI level so I can install a 300 tdi engine?

That's why I pu it in quotes! I have a DI & love it for everything but the rust. DIIs are in great shape but the engines seem to be more fragile, & I want to do a diesel conversion no matter which I use. I basically want a DI in a DII's galvanized body. I'm also considering replacing all the rusted panels on my DI with galvanized sheet metal.

I dont think i'll move to a d2 for my personal vehicle, but I would get one for the wife/family, as it would see a less hard a life that way.

I do love the look of a lifted big tire '03 and up d2.

Are the D1 auto tranny's computer controlled, cause thats the only limiting factor in a diesel swap that i can see.

If i had a choice TD5

From everything I've read, the DI transmission is not electronically controlled, & that is probably why the diesel importers all say that they're kits are not for the DII. I'm imagining the instruments on the DII are electronic too & need to be swapped for DI gauges. Sounds like a lot of work, but so is fixing the rust on my DI.

I'd have to do some research, but my bet is that you import the cluster with the diesel engine, and just connect to the rpm to the alternator.

if the D1 trannys are not electronicly controlled then i'll be looking to swap to a 300tdi when my 4.0 takes a dump.

My truck is originally from British Columbia, so it hasnt seen alot of road salt.

If you are in the states a TDI engine is more or less a pipe dream. Not impossible but pretty close.
