One minor point:

If you get the polarity incorrect, the worst case is your fan will spin the wrong way

My PO did this by wire swap on a fan replace. When the fans ran, they subtracted air flow from the main radiator. Overheat at idle was happening all the time when AC was on. My viscous clutch was also bad, and when you switched on the AC at idle, the reverse air flow would just about stop the viscous fan. A plastic bag held in front of grille was blown away, rather than sucked toward engine.

Moral - you don't want to operate with no electric fan (when needed), and even worse is one that runs backwards....

IMHO the Discos are so noisy that owners just don't notice the fan being dead until overheating happens. Maybe that Saturday under hood inspection should include a spin of all the fans...
Buzz, I was referring that nothing would be damage on the install but I also said you need to have the fans pushing air toward the engine verified by my paper
towel test. Could use anything within reason for this test of course.

After looking at your write up, your aftermarket fan surely does not produce as mich airflow as stock not even taking into account not knowing the output of your electric motor. The clearance between the tip of the blade and the fan shroud is critical for fan efficiency and it looks like your clearance is much larger than stock. I would purchase one of the motors I reference and go back with the stock fan.

I have a new radiator arriving monday from lucky8, it needed to be changed since I had already repaired one crack in it with jb weld. If this does not fix the high temps then I will try one of the motors you referenced.

Radiator did not fix it but, following this thread and changing to the listed electric motor did fix it.

was your fan dead? or maybe just not as strong as it should have been? did you use the motor listed and what are your temps now vs prior?

I'm just going to throw this out there...

Check the coolant cap. It's $14 at autozone. They keep them in stock for a reason (BMW/LR part).

I think my fan motor just went yesterday so I just wanted to check and make sure that the VDO PM9116 will fit a 01' D2

Had to do a little digging to find this old thread, and glad I did. I noticed my temps were a little higher than normal with the A/C on yesterday, and lo and behold the condenser fan was not working. Checked the 40 amp fuse and it was blown. Pulled the grill and checked the fan to see if it was locked. It was not locked, but it did not want to turn freely. Pulled the fan and removed the back cover and the bushing/bearing was dry and full of dry flaky crud. Cleaned it all up and greased the bushing, and soaked the front bearing with some heavy oil. Reinstalled the fan and fuse and the fan started out slow and noisy, then spun faster and faster and noise went almost away. Realizing this is a temp fix, I went to searching on here and found this thread. Found the recommended fan at Advance Auto online and added the TRT30 discount code and there is one in stock 5 miles from the house. Total cost with discount 50.39 plus tax. Will pick up and after work and post pics of the R&R.
