Default Door “pop”

All of the doors on my 99 D2 make a pronounced “pop” whenever I open or close them. It happens at about 30 degrees from closed. It’s not the end of the world of course but I have no idea what’s causing it. I’ve tried lubing the hinged with lithium grease. Any ideas for what is causing this?

Mine do as well. My LR Indy says its the door stops, which hold the door open, and its normal. To me it sounds like something is broken.

That’s good to know- I thought it was “unusual” that ALL of the doors did the same thing at the same angle, but I’ve never had a car that makes such a pronounced sound. As long as I know nothings being damaged it doesn’t really bother me. Thanks!

My right rear passenger door does the same popping noise for the last 5 years. No matter how much lube I spray in that area the noise is still there.

My D1 used to do it real bad, I had to disassemble the door check system and flip over the plates that ride on the door check "rod"(it makes sense when you see them in front of your face)

the plates had actually worn down with use and were popping as they got tweaked while opening/closing

I've had this problem on multiple vehicles, including my Disco.

The system that puts tension on the door when you open and close it has some wear in it. There's a roll pin that connects the two parts of the door check strap, and after years of use, the pin wears out the check strap itself and pops as the door is opened and closed. That's the sound you are hearing. I think the only fix would be an oversized roll pin. I haven't ever had the energy to do more than diagnose it.

FWIW you can see a pic on page 934 of the RAVE. #4 in the diagram is the pin.

Thanks for the info, I saw the diagram in the RAVE manual and that clears up a lot, I’ll check it out next time I have some time with the truck.

That is the pin.
I replaced the pin on my rear passenger door a couple of years ago and the popping stopped.
These trucks are weird.

What is the "trick" in getting the door check strap back into position so you can put the replacement pin in? I can move it out using a pair of vice grips about 2 " but not close
enough to drop the pin in.....ideas??
