Default Door lock switch kills engine

Last time I had a D2 was in 2014, after many years, I defected and have been running D3's here in TX since that time. Now, I have to re-learn everything D2 again.

So, I now have a 2001 Disco 2 SD and I am trying to get it on the road. As I try to get the drive cycles completed to pass inspection, I was playing with the central door lock switch in the dash to work. As it turns out, the PO had disconnected it. I plug it in and think thing are good, but when I hit the top part of the switch to unlock the doors, the engine electricals cut out and the engine dies. I have looked at the Wire Diagram and the Electrical Library and cannot trace a spot where these interact. IF, I use the key in the door, I can lock and unlock all the doors and rear hatch no problem. IF I rev the engine, and hit the switch very quickly, I can unlock the doors and the engine will pick up and keep running.

Other than the switch grounding out (I will pull it and take it apart this weekend) What else should I look at?

Jeff

That is a bizarre issue.

I wonder if it is tied to the alarm in some way.

If no answers are forth coming here you might try over on DiscoWeb. Crowds not always as polite as the members here, but there are a few on there who know their stuff.

Hey I know the place. I would equate it to a windowless bar down by the docks. I tend to stay here (in the LR3 section) or at Disco3 UK, but it seems my horizons are expanding.

Thanks for the thoughts I will look at the alarm as well.

Yeah, wonder if you have an aftermarket alarm system? Do you have factory looking remotes?

Funny you should mention the remotes as I have NONE. It had one non fob key and a bad tumbler. I replaced tumbler with the aftermarket ignition and key set sold by a few venders. I will look t the ignition a little closer as well.

Im having the same issue for some time now.
After searching and searching I found somewhere possibly the Aussie site,a reference to a hard rain causing this for somebody and a part swap fixing it. But they did the Fusebox ,BCU,ECU, at the same time.

It had just stormed really hard when it began happening to me.

Its not the fusebox on the driver side, I replaced with a spare same issue still present.

Pulled the BCU and ECU behind the glovebox and found evidence of wetness and some corrosion. Cleaned up the corrosion but it didn't solve the issue.

Havent replaced the BCU yet as i keep finding ones with higher mileage than my truck has and dont want to make my odometer incorrect.

Id throw a bcu at it if its sensible in your situation.

Im getting a tiny amount water in the passenger floor from the common culprit as my windshield cowl is almost non existent.

EDIT ----BCU and passenger fuse box replaced. Issue still present--

I'd bet water ingress into interior fusebox (but as poster above said, didn't solve his issue). Any of them 99-02 swap, and then 03-04 swap (but not one to the other)

Or, BCU. Because it controls door locks.

But either way, probably water behind dash in connectors / ECU's / fuseboxes somewhere

Went ahead and replaced the BCU and ECU today. Had replaced the interior fusebox previously.

With all items replaced. Central unlock switch still kills the engine.

Note that hitting lock does nothing but lock the doors. Unlock. Kills the engine.

Also noticed my rear wiper wiping 1x when the car is started or turned off. Strange times.

I know a few people have had this issue with the central lock. Hopeing to document a fix

I have this exact same issue. The door lock on the dash shuts the car off (both lock and unlock, but unlock does it more reliably), but it will remain running if I rev while locking. Additionally, when I remotely unlock or lock the car the rear wiper swipes once, and the same thing happens when I start the car. When the car is off, and I lock or unlock using the dash switch, all dash lights illuminate.

I noticed that this issue started after I went through the car wash... I investigated Interior fuse box, BCU, and ECU for moisture, and found corrosion on the interior fuse box. I removed the board, cleaned with vinegar, then reinstalled... problem solved! It was fixed for a couple of months until I went through the car wash again and the problem returned. There is no moisture or corrosion return on the fuse box, so I believe that was not the direct cause.

My next step is to investigate the BCU and its connectors for moisture again. Ill report back here if I find anything!

You need to investigate your ground straps. They must all be in place, and their connections must be clean.
