Default Drive shaft fell out while my wife was driving.

I’m out of town for a few months for training, my wife’s driving the truck on the weekends to keep it from sitting. While driving the front drive shaft . . . fell out from the transfer case 500 feet from the house. Looks like the Uni ripped apart. So, obviously replace it.

Heres the question: there’s play in the front differential, meaning it turns forward and back a bit. Is this an indication of a larger issue? Also, should I be looking at more than just replacing the Uni.

I have the rave and a parts manual. It’s a discovery 2 HSE, lifted with A/T tires. 92k I’m the 5th owner and had it form half a year. Previous maintenance unknown. Looking to keep.

A bit of Slop in the front diff isn't to abnormal.

You got off lucky most of the time it punches a hole in the tranny

So that's what a front driveshaft failure looks like! Yes, you got off lucky. I heard about this and removed my front driveshaft as a precaution. Thanks for the post and pics.

Yep, extremely lucky. If you get about a quarter turn out of the differential yoke...that's normal. You may want to replace that 02 sensor while you're at it, looks pretty beat up.

Dang. Good luck, that's a shame. Glad nothing weird happened while she was driving it

I’d replace the whole shaft (good ones at lucky8) and not mess around with joints.
You got off very lucky there.
